“…However, the determination of a complete three-dimensional local atomic structure of a material without long-range order in the arrangement of atoms requires complex theoretical calculations using supercomputers [ 42 ]. Application of both XANES and EXAFS methods makes it possible to thoroughly study the local atomic structure and phase composition of the nanoparticles [ 43 , 44 ].…”

“…XAS comprises extended X-ray absorption near-edge structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopies. EXAFS allows determining coordination numbers and interatomic distances in materials under study, while XANES (Kravtsova et al, 2018) contains information on the local electronic structure (in particular, oxidation states of atoms, densities of unoccupied electronic states near the bottom of conduction band), and full 3-D atomic geometry (interatomic distances and bond angles) around a specific type of atoms. Recently, XAS has been successfully used to investigate details of the atomic and electronic structures of different types of geological materials (Berry et al, 2017;Dyar, McCanta, et al, 2016;Kravtsova et al, 2016;Rodina et al, 2013) and impact rocks (Giuli et al, 2002;Kravtsova et al, 2020;Wang et al, 2013).…”
