Xanthan Matrix as Drug ZDelivery System

Abstract: Here we present a new drug delivery system based on xanthan esterified with acrylic acid. This material served as a matrix for the incorporation of bioactive substances with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. The materials were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Scanning Electron Micrography (SEM). Mechanical strength tests showed a substantial improvement in the resilience and flexibility of the polymer matrix modified by esterifi… Show more

“…The peaks at 1488 and 919 cm −1 confirmed the presence of the C=C double bond. [ 31 ] The presence of CF in XGCF and XGACCF structure is verified by adsorption bands in the 600‐ to 400‐cm −1 region.…”

“…The successful chemical modification of XG was confirmed by the 1 H‐NMR spectrum of XGAC (Figure S1b) by the appearance of a signal at 5.5 ppm, characteristic of beta protons of the acrylic group. [ 31 ] New materials comprising XG, XGAC and CF (denoted XGCF and XGACCF) were obtained and characterized. Their structure was examined by FTIR analysis and the collected data are shown in Figure S2.…”

“…The broad adsorption bands at 3338 cm −1 are attributed to the presence of –OH groups. Stretching vibrations of aliphatic C–H were identified at 2923–2856 cm −1 [ 29 ]. The bands present in the region between 1633 and 1598 cm −1 were assigned to asymmetric and symmetric stretching vibrations of carboxylate ions.…”
