“…Some of the microorganisms that cause it (such as S. maltophilia), show intrinsic resistance to many currently used antibiotics and therefore constitute a special challenge. There are only few reported cases of iatrogenic S. maltophilia-induced endophthalmitis in the literature [5][6][7][8][9][10]. Here we report the largest outbreak of S. maltophilia-induced PE published so far, describing a cluster of 26 patients who were infected within two days at a single hospital due to contaminated rinsing solution.…”

“…All 26 patients were given topical and systemic antibiotic treatment in addition to intravitreal antibiotics, which were adapted based on the results of antibiotic susceptibility testing after identifying S. maltophilia. A final visual acuity of ‡ 0.2 was achieved by 21 of 26 patients (80%), as compared to 56% of patients with Gram-negative microorganisms cultured from eye samples in the EVS [17] and 56% overall in the S. maltophilia PE cases reported in previous case reports [5][6][7][8][9][10]. A final visual acuity of ‡ 0.5 was achieved by 14 of 26 patients (54%) compared to 50% of patients with Gram-negative PE in the EVS and 37.5% in previous S. maltophilia PE case reports.…”
