Xanthopygoides niger Cameron, 1951 (Xanthopygina) belongs to the genus Philonthus Stephens, 1829 (Philonthina): systematic and nomenclatural changes for the African Staphylinini (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae, Staphylininae, Staphylinini)

Abstract: A poorly known African species Xanthopygoides niger (Cameron, 1951), hitherto a member of the monotypic genus of the subtribe Xanthopygina is transferred to the subgenus Raucalius Tottenham, 1949 of the genus Philonthus Stephens, 1829, subtribe Philonthina, and redescribed. The new genus-group synonym Raucalius Tottenham, 1951 = Xanthopygoides Verdcourt, 1952 is established. A new combination Philonthus niger (Cameron, 1951), preoccupied by Philonthus niger (O. Müller, 1764) which is a synonym of Philonthus sp… Show more

“…Within ‘Staphylinini propria’, with single exceptions (e.g. Solodovnikov & Schomann 2009), morphology‐based analyses confirm the monophyly of the formally recognized subtribes Staphylinina, Philonthina and Xanthopygina (the latter only as far as the Neotropical fauna is concerned, see Chatzimanolis 2008; Chatzimanolis & Ashe 2009; Solodovnikov 2009). But it casts doubts on the monophyly of Anisolinina, and it does not provide enough data to conclude about the status of the subtribe Eucibdelina that presumably is nested within Staphylinina.…”

“…Philonthina Kirby, 1837 . A large subtribe of Staphylinini, its composition as given in Newton & Thayer (2005), Solodovnikov (2009) and Solodovnikov & Schomann (2009). According to the morphology‐based phylogenetic analysis of Solodovnikov & Schomann (2009) the subtribe Hyptiomina is nested within Philonthina.…”

“…Whereas Sharp (1876Sharp ( , 1884 had described Xanthopygina from a core group of Neotropical genera, many subsequent authors misinterpreted his descriptions and did not examine his types: Bernhauer & Schubert (1914) added a number of genera from the Nearctic, Cameron (1932), Scheerpeltz (1940), Blackwelder (1943, 1944, Sawada (1961), andSmetana (1977) added more genera to the Xanthopygina from the Palearctic, Oriental and Afrotropical regions that rendered the subtribe polyphyletic. The taxonomy was in such a poor state that during the 1980s several revisions of 'Xanthopygina' appeared dealing with the Oriental species (Naomi, 1982, (Herman, 2001) and papers (Hayashi, 1993(Hayashi, , 1997Smetana & Davies, 2000;Schillhammer, 2002Schillhammer, , 2004Schillhammer, , 2009Solodovnikov, 2009) have begun to clarify the generic composition of Xanthopygina. All non-Neotropical genera that used to be assigned to Xanthopygina are currently placed in other subtribes (Table 1).…”

“…These are the genera Taxiplagus Bernhauer, 1915 (= Prionophilonthus Scheerpeltz, 1974; = Quediosoma Cameron, 1926) (Philonthina); Prianophtalmus Bernhauer, 1932, Trigonopalpus Cameron, 1951 and Xanthopygoides Verdcour, 1952 (all in Xanthopygina). Revision of Xanthopygoides revealed its synonymy with the genus Philonthus Stephens, 1829 (Philonthina) (Solodovnikov, 2009). Preliminary examination of Taxiplagus , Prianophtalmus and Trigonopalpus suggested that they are also related to the current Philonthina (or ‘Philonthina propria’ lineage here).…”
