Xylene Isomerization over USY Zeolite in a Riser Simulator:  A Comprehensive Kinetic Model

Abstract: The kinetics of vapor-phase isomerization of xylenes has been carried out over a USY zeolite catalyst using a fluidized-bed reactor. A comprehensive kinetic model based on the triangular reaction scheme is proposed for the reaction. The rate constants and activation energies are estimated from simplified, effective kinetic models based on the isomerization of the pure xylene isomers. The obtained results confirm an earlier proposition in the literature that the mutual interconversion of p-and o-xylenes in 1,3-… Show more

“…The decrease of I/D with temperature indicates that disproportionation reaction is more sensitive to temperature than isomerization. This observation is in line with the fact that disproportionation requires a higher energy of activation as compared to isomerization reaction [31][32][33]. conversion, this ratio decreases from 7.5 to 1.8 by increasing the temperature from 400 to 500°C.…”

“…fusion of molecules with higher dipole moment is more hindered due to stronger adsorption on highly acidic catalysts [28,43,45]. The dipole moments for OX, MX, and PX are 0.62, 0.36, and 0.00 D, respectively [46]; this might explain the lower diffusivity of OX in large-pore zeolites.…”

“…The advantage of utilizing rigorous models as compared to empirical approaches is that the prediction accuracy of rigorous models is significantly superior over a wide operating range, hence researchers pursue the kinetic model of process industries. As to C 8 -aromatics isomerization, many kinetic models have been developed over several zeolites [2][3][4][5][6]. Normally, hydrogen is added to promote the isomerization and to prevent the coking on catalyst in the hydroisomerization process.…”

“…As to the developed kinetic models, only a few models [4][5][6] consider the catalyst deactivation function. The ''reactant converted'' decay model has successfully accounted for the catalyst deactivation in low reactant yield.…”
