Yeasts from an oligotrophic lake in Patagonia (Argentina): diversity, distribution and synthesis of photoprotective compounds and extracellular enzymes

Abstract: Nahuel Huapi (NH) Lake is an oligotrophic temperate lake of glacial origin with high transparency, surrounded by well-developed forests and located at San Carlos de Bariloche, Nahuel Huapi National Park, in Patagonia, Argentina. In this lake, we characterized yeast distribution and diversity along a south-to-north transect and established a relationship between the ability to produce photoprotective compounds (PPCs) (carotenoid pigments and mycosporines) and the occurrence of yeast at different collection poin… Show more

“…This algae was isolated from other aquatic environments containing high levels of organic matter (14,23) and is considered an emerging pathogen (14). The specie Aureobasidium pullulans were isolated in the majority sampling sites that corroborate the suggestion that this yeastlike species is often isolated from many different types of water (19,6).…”

“…This species is generalist and can be isolated from many different types of water, soil and the phyllosphere (Rosa and Péter 2006). It can synthesise antioxidants and UV sunscreen compounds such as mycosporines that minimise UV-induced damage (Libkind et al 2009;Brandão et al 2011), which could be important for its survival in the phytotelmata of V. minarum because this bromeliad colonises environments with intense levels of solar radiation.…”

“…10 Considering the current trend for low-alcohol drinks, and modifications in flavors with an emphasis on the aromatic profile, this study aims to evaluate the aromatic profile of fermented apple, obtained by the action of Hanseniaspora uvarum and Hanseniaspora guilliermondii strains using two methods of analysis: static headspace and SPME. The microrganisms used were H. uvarum and H. guilliermondii, which had been previously identified by analysis of molecular profiles (PCR-fingerprinting) using the PCR mini/microsatellite (MSP-PCR) technique with synthetic oligonucleotide (GTG) 5, 11 with DNA extraction using the method of Brandaõ et al 12 For sequencing, the D1/D2 domains of the larger subunit of the rRNA gene were amplified, 13 and the sequences obtained were compared with those deposited in the GenBank database using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool. 14 The reagents and standards used were of chromatographic grade (≥99.7%, Fluka; ≥98.5%, Merck; ≥97−99%, Aldrich; analytical grade, Interchim).…”
