Yield and physicochemical characteristics of ‘BRS Magna’ and ‘Isabel Precoce’ grapes influenced by pruning in the São Francisco river valley

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the productive performance and physicochemical characteristics of ‘BRS Magna’ and ‘Isabel Precoce’ grapes influenced by two types of pruning. The experiment was carried out during two growing seasons in a commercial vineyard of Petrolina, PE, in the period 2013-2014. Treatments were represented by two cultivars, ‘Isabel Precoce’ and ‘BRS Magna’, and two types of pruning, with selection during plant formation (P1) and without selection (P2) of lateral branches, using … Show more

“…The grapevines grafted on 'IAC 766' had heavier clusters than those on 'IAC 572' (Table 6) and are in agreement with the results obtained by Silva et al (2018) in 'Isabel Precoce','BRS Carmem','BRS Cora', Máximo', which also exhibited heavier clusters on IAC 766. The 'BRS Magna' clusters exhibited a mean of 165 g when grafted onto the IAC 766 rootstock, near the values obtained by Leão et al (2018) in previous studies with the same cultivar in the Vale do Submédio São Francisco.…”

“…The Vale do Submédio São Francisco stands out as the new emergent production region of high-quality grape juices produced from Brazilian cultivars, such as 'Isabel Precoce', 'BRS Magna', 'BRS Violeta', 'BRS Cora', and 'BRS Carmem' (Lima et al, 2014). The BRS Magna has yielded prodigiously in the Vale do Submédio São Francisco (Leão et al, 2018) and is rich in phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity (Lima et al, 2014).…”

“…Therefore, the lower average values of temperatures and global radiation might have reduced the metabolism in berries harvest in the first half of 2018. Leão et al (2018), studying the same region and with the same cultivar trained to overhead trellis and grafted onto 'IAC 572', reported soluble solid contents of 17.5 ºBrix, and observed no influence of production cycle.…”

“…Some studies have highlighted characteristics in juices made from 'BRS Magna' grapes, including basic components of quality, phenolic profile and contents, antioxidant activity and volatile organic compounds (Crucello et al, 2018;Lima et al, 2014;Mariani;Nava, 2018;Ristchel et al, 2014). Aspects of phenology, adaptation to different regions and yield performance have also been evaluated (Ritschel et al, 2014;Leão at al., 2018). Additionally, the cultivated areas are expanding despite the limited knowledge on management techniques, including production factors that provide higher agronomic performance.…”
