Yield and quality attributes of faba bean inbred lines grown under marginal environmental conditions of Sudan

Abstract: Faba beans (Vicia faba L.) represent an essential source of food protein for many people in Sudan, especially those who cannot afford to buy animal meat. The demand for faba bean seeds is greatly increased in recent years, and consequently its production area was extended southward where the climate is marginally suitable. Therefore, this study was aimed to evaluate seed yield and nutritional quality of five faba bean inbred lines grown under marginal environmental conditions of Sudan. The inbred lines have co… Show more

“…Therefore, 100SW, NSPl and NPP showed positive correlation with GY, PY and SWP. These results corroborate studies that assessed the correlation between these agronomic variables in different bean genotypes (GASIM et al, 2015;GONÇALVES et al, 2017).…”

Recently, conventional selection and breeding techniques were used in the study of crop salinity tolerance (Gasim et al 2015, Mahlooji et al 2018. Nevertheless, the insufficient understanding salinity tolerance and the absence of an adequate method of screening techniques limit the effort of breeding for salinity tolerance (Munns and James 2003).…”

“…Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is a globally important grain legume crop due to its How to cite this paper: Gasim beneficial role in sustainable cropping [1] and rising requirements for plant protein as food and feed [2]. In Sudan, due to the recent increase in animal protein price, most of people shift towards less reliance on meat to supply their daily dietary protein from plant protein, especially faba bean [3], a situation that necessitates an increase in crop yield [4] [5]. Different from self-pollinated legumes, faba bean productivity is hindered by its reproductive mode [6] as the crop is partly self-and partly cross-pollinated species (mix-mating).…”
