Selection of appropriate weed management strategy helps reduce rice yield loss due to weeds. Despite some undesirable side-effects, no viable alternative is currently available to shift the chemical weed management in rice. However, time of herbicide application is very important with respect to its efficacy. Keeping in mind the inevitability of herbicidal weed control, the current study was designed to evaluate the response of selected aromatic fine rice varieties of Bangladesh to different herbicides based weed management practices compare to farmers' practices. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The experiment consisted of five aromatic rice varieties; Kalijira, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan37, BRRI dhan38 and Binadhan-13, and six different weed management practices comprising no weeding, weed free, mechanical + manual weeding, pre-emergence herbicide + manual weeding, post-emergence herbicide + manual weeding and pre-+ post-emergence herbicide. Eleven weed species belonging to five families were observed in the experimental plots. Based on the summed dominance ratio (SDR), grassy weed species Echinochloa crusgalli (SDR of 30.7) was the most dominant species, whereas broadleaf weed Nymphaea nouchali (SDR of 0.83) was the least one. Among the weed control treatments, application of pre-+ post emergence herbicides offered the highest reduction in weed density and biomass at all sampling dates which resulted in minimum crop-weed competition facilitating improvement in the yield contributing characters and finally resulted in the highest grain yield (2.5 t ha −1 ) and harvest index (30.7%) next to the weed free treatment. The variety BRRI dhan38 gave the highest grain yield (3.4 t ha −1 ) due to the highest performance of the yield contributing characters among the varieties. In interaction, BRRI dhan38 with pre-+ post-emergence herbicide application gave the highest yield (3.4 t ha −1 ) apart from the weed free treatment. Being efficient in weed density and biomass reduction as well as the highest yield producer, sequential application of pre-and post-emergence herbicides may be recommended for effective weed management practices in BRRI dhan38.

Crop genotype plays a dominant role in crop production systems. They affect crop productivity by their higher yield potentials, resistance against insect pest and diseases under different climatic conditions. To evaluate different varieties of rice for their growth and yield characteristics, an experiment was conducted to investigate high yielding rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties under rainfed lowland condition of Nagaland at Neiphrelie Colony, Chumukedima during the kharif season of 2016. The study treatments adopted were eleven rice varietiies viz., Ranjit, Bahadur, Aghonibora, Satyaranjan, Moniram, Kushal, Mulagabharu, Bokuljoha, Basundara, Piolee and Ketikijoha (HYV rice released by AAU) at a spacing of 20×15 cm 2 using 3-4 seedling hill-1. The experiment was set in Randomized block design (RBD) with three replications. Almost all the varieties were found to be semi-dwarf in nature. Data on various growth and yield parameters revealed that Satyaranjan produced higher number of tillers hill-1 (23.44), no. of panicle hill-1 (22), yield (59.96 q ha-1) and harvest index (43.70). The length of panicle was found highest in Moniram (26.45 cm) and lowest in Basundara (21.51 cm). Bokuljoha recorded highest straw yield (94.38 q ha-1) and lowest filled grain percentage (73.17) and test weight (10.87 g). Filled grain percentage was found highest in Ranjit (86.72) and the highest test weight was recorded in Aghonibora (26.01 g). The rice varieties Satyaranjan (59.96 q ha-1), Ranjit (57.01 q ha-1) and Kushal (56.39 q ha-1) can be successfully cultivated under rainfed lowland condition of Nagaland.

AbstractUtilization of urea super granule (USG) with raised bed cultivation system for transplanted boro (winter, irrigated) rice production is a major concern now days. A field experiment was conducted in the chuadanga district of Bangladesh to compare the two cultivation methods: deep placement of USG on raised bed with boro rice, and prilled urea (PU) broadcasting in conventional planting. Results showed that USG in raised bed planting increased grain yields of transplanted boro rice by up to 18.18% over PU in conventional planting. Deep placement of USG in raised bed planting increased the number of panicle m -2 , number of grains panicle -1 and 1000-grains weight of boro rice than the PU in conventional planting. Better plant growth was observed by deep placement of USG in raised bed planting compared to PU in conventional planting. Sterility percentage and weed infestation were lower on USG in raised bed planting compared to the PU in conventional planting methods. Forty seven percent irrigation water and application time could be saved by USG in raised bed planting than PU in conventional planting. Deep placement of USG in bed saved N fertilizer consumption over conventional planting. Water use efficiency for grain and biomass production was higher with deep placement of USG in bed planting than the PU broadcasting in conventional planting methods. Similarly, agronomic efficiency of N fertilizer by USG in bed planting was significantly higher than the PU broadcasting in conventional planting. This study concluded that deep placement of USG in raised bed planting for transplanted boro rice is a new approach to achieve fertilizer and water use efficiency as well as higher yield and less water input compared to existing agronomic practices in Bangladesh.
