Yiqi Jiemin decoction alleviates allergic rhinitis in a guinea pig model by suppressing inflammation, restoring Th1/Th2 balance, and improving cellular metabolism

Abstract: We investigated the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of Yiqi Jiemin decoction (YJD), a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), in the ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic rhinitis (AR) model in guinea pigs. YJD significantly decreased infiltration of mast cells and eosinophils into the nasal mucosa of AR model guinea pigs. YJD also increased expression of TGF-β in the nasal mucosa, restored the balance of Th1/Th2 immune cell responses, and decreased serum levels of various pro-inflammatory mediators, incl… Show more

“…), histamine contents of nasal mucosa, serum IgE, eosinophilic infiltration of nasal mucosa, small blood vessel dilation, tissue edema and epithelial shedding of animals in the model group were significantly higher than those in the control group [ 17 ], implying that the construction of this AR model was successful. This model has been reported in many literatures [ 1 , 18 21 ]. Based on these findings, we further explored the effect of topical rhIL-1Ra on the symptoms of AR guinea pigs.…”

“…Numerous HMs used to help in the recovery of nasal mucous membranes in AR have been reported to have anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects. 23 , 24 Based on these results, it is highly advisable to use D-HMs to improve the nasal symptoms and related quality of life.…”

“…62 Basic studies on AR also show that TCM treatment can reduce the content of Ig E in serum, balance the immune response of helper T cells (Th) 1/Th2 cells, alleviate neurogenic inflammation of nasal mucosa and improve nasal symptoms. 63 Acupuncture has been recommended for AR treatment in the guidelines of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery published in the United States, and acupuncture has been listed as a supplementary treatment for AR in many overseas countries. 2 Therefore, this study mainly discusses the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of AR.…”
