Abstract: In a dynamic manufacturing environment, manufacturing cell configurations based on current part mix and production process may need to be revised once the part mix or the production process has changed. However, machine and equipment moving costs make frequent reconfiguration uneconomical and sometimes impossible. Designing a sustainable cellular manufacturing system in a dynamic environment is studied in this paper. An integer programming model is developed to minimize material handling and machine costs as w… Show more

“…Heragu and Chen (1998) applied a mathematical model to cell formation problem by considering three aspects; resource utilization, alternate routings, and practical constraints (Heragu & J. Chen, 1998). Chen (1998) worked on designing a sustainable cellular manufacturing system in a dynamic environment and developed an integer programming model to minimize material handling and machine costs as well as cell reconfiguration cost for a multi-period planning horizon (Mingyuan Chen, 1998). Wang (1998) formulated a linear assignment model to the group formation problem (Wang, 1998).…”

“…Average linkage clustering algorithm for grouping parts (products) into part (product) families was used [32,33]. They considered effectiveness of a Reconfigurable Manufacturing System (RMS) depends on the formation of best set of product families.…”

“…They considered effectiveness of a Reconfigurable Manufacturing System (RMS) depends on the formation of best set of product families. The reconfiguration issues in manufacturing systems were introduced mainly on reconfiguring existing cellular system to another cells taking into consideration system utilization and throughput [34]. A reconfiguration link was suggested to interface between market requirements and manufacturing facilities to group products into families and select the appropriate family at each configuration stage [35].…”
