“…We recommend that the government encourages natural mentors to keep in touch with youth during a pandemic and supports them in coping with the challenges of a pandemic. When youth experience mental health problems that make them unable to get their lives on track during a pandemic, which may also make it difficult to adhere to preventive measures, they can be encouraged to actively select a natural mentor from their social environment through youth‐initiated mentoring program, showing promising results in a recent meta‐analysis (van Dam et al, 2021 ). Research by Zhong et al ( 2020 ) shows that more knowledge about COVID‐19 is associated with a lower chance of negative attitudes and inappropriate behavior.…”

“…Research on past pandemics shows that young people react differently, both physically and mentally, from adults during the period of an outbreak (Ragelienė 2016 ). In addition, the measures imposed by the government to combat a pandemic often have an unpleasant side effect on adults, whereas the consequences for young people are often expected to be more immediate and greater, having an excessive impact on their social life, development opportunities, well‐being and physical and mental health (Bruce‐Barrett et al, 2007 ; Koller et al, 2010 ; Ragelienė 2016 ). Research on the behavior of youth during a pandemic ensures that measures to combat the current or future outbreak(s) can meet the needs of youth.…”

“…In the future, researchers should continue examining NPA influence to help elucidate the types of NPAs that may be most helpful in particular areas, as well as what factors associated with HIV-related health behaviors may be most amenable to NPA influence. As this information becomes clearer, following a youth-initiated mentoring approach ( Van Dam et al, 2021 ), NPAs could be recruited to participate in HIV prevention and HIV care engagement interventions, both to help intervene with social determinants of health (e.g., stable employment) and to support specific sexual health behaviors (e.g., engagement with health care providers). School and municipal policymakers may also consider offering or requiring training in LGBTQ+ and racial/ethnic diversity for school personnel and community-based organizations so that adults in those settings are prepared to provide culturally responsive support YBLSM.…”

“…Despite most mentoring programs for youth seeking to create caring relationships between young people (mentees) and more experienced non-parental adults (mentors) (van Dam et al, 2021, Burton et al, 2021, peer mentoring programs contemplating the role of youth mentors to promote positive outcomes for younger peers is increasing (Burton et al, 2021). Peer mentoring explores the well-known fact that adolescents seek independence from older adults during this period of life (c.f.…”
