Due to the high level of competition, many people may assume that student-athletes are healthier than their non-athlete peers. However, there are several critical pieces of information not considered in this assessment. Many student-athletes have an atypical lifestyles and stressors that can negatively affect their physical health (Rubin, 2016). Although most university students must deal with career choices, identity exploration, mental health issues and the navigation of interpersonal relationships, student-athletes face additional stressors with athletic time commitments, constant public scrutiny, gruelling daily workouts and overwhelming expectations (Divin, 2010). Time demands, physical demands, balancing athletic and academic endeavours, the immense pressure to win, and career adjustment issues can also add considerable emotional and physical strain that makes them a population at risk for negative health outcomes (Dean & Rowan, 2014).
