Yttrium oxide as a Q-switcher for the near-infrared erbium-doped fiber laser

Abstract: Yttrium oxide (Y 2 O 3 ) has been widely used in metal-reinforced composites, microelectronics, waveguide lasers, and high-temperature protective coatings because of its good physical and photoelectric properties. However, few studies have been done on the nonlinear optical applications of Y 2 O 3 as saturable absorbers (SAs) in fiber lasers so far. Here, a passively Q-switched nearinfrared fiber laser using Y 2 O 3 as a Q-switching device is demonstrated. The optical nonlinear properties of the Y 2 O 3 SA pre… Show more

“…With the pump power increased from 180 mW to 300 mW, the repetition rate of the Q-switched laser increased from 17.30 kHz to 32.56 kHz, and the corresponding pulse width decreased from 7.94 µs to 3.67 µs. The less transformation of pulse duration at high pump power indicates that the SA device is about to saturate [33,46]. In addition, with the increase of pump power from 180 mW to 300 mW, the output power almost linearly increased from 0.26 mW to 1.08 mW, while the pulse energy increased from 15.30 nJ to 33.14 nJ.…”
