Z-Scan measurements in poly (methyl methacrylate) doped with perylimide dyes

Abstract: Optical limiting with reverse absorption saturation is reported on plastic bulk of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) doped with two different perylimide molecules, KF 241 and BASF 339. The non-linear absorption coefficient β was measured at three wavelengths using the open z-scan technique. β was used to calculate the value of imaginary component of the third order non-linear susceptibility χ (3) . The nonlinear behavior is explained in terms of a six-level model of electronic structure.

“…1,2 Particularly, two-photon absorption and reverse saturable absorption, characterized by a reduction in transmission with respect to intensity, are being studied for numerous optical device applications such as optical switches, optical rectification, and optical limiters. 3,4 A thorough literature survey reveals that thiophene-based conjugated polymers are currently under active investigation for third-order NLO properties. Among the various types of conjugated polymers, they are in the forefront of research efforts mainly because of their easy processability, chemical stability, and readiness of functionalities.…”

“…Currently, materials possessing significant nonlinear optical absorption are of much interest. For example, reverse saturable absorption (RSA) and two-photon absorption (TPA) are being studied for numerous optical device applications including optical switching, optical rectification and most importantly optical limiting [1,2]. Saturable absorption (SA) has extensively been applied in laser physics, e.g.…”

“…Excited state absorption is one the main objectives of this study, because it is one of the underdeveloped area in the optical spectroscopy of transition metal-doped crystal lasers. ESA data is of interest because on one hand it provides fundamental information about the nature of the lying excited states often inaccessible from the ground state, and on the other hand, it can provide important information to assess the lasing potential of the medium (Manaa 2004;Andrews and Hitelman 1986). In order to clearly express the nonlinear potentialities of the studied laser crystals, the third order nonlinear susceptibility is calculated using Eqs.…”
