“…Another report showed that aging weakened the circadian rhythm of the rat LC endocrine function, as exemplified by attenuating the expression of several circadian clock and steroidogenic genes, as well as reduced androgen levels (Baburski, Sokanovic, Janjic, et al, 2015). Our previous research confirmed that expression of clock and steroidogenic genes follow circadian rhythms in mouse LCs in vivo and in vitro (Chen et al, 2017; Li et al, 2021; Zhao et al, 2021). A recent study demonstrated that LH‐cAMP‐PKA signaling plays a vital role in regulating the expression of clock genes in rat LCs both in vivo and in vitro (Baburski et al, 2019).…”

“…Furthermore, Bmal1 knockout or inhibition was reported to decrease testosterone secretion by reducing mRNA levels of steroidogenic genes ( Star , Cyp11a1 , Hsd3b2 , Hsd17b3 , 3β-Hsd , Sf1 , and Nur77 ) ( 101 , 103 , 111 , 112 ) and Apo ( Apoa1/2 and Apoc3 ) ( 112 ). Moreover, Bmal1 knockdown inhibited testosterone level by inducing apoptosis of Leydig cells ( 111 ), and the circadian clock system was involved to the process of bisphenol A ( 113 ) and zearalenone ( 114 ) reducing testosterone production. In a word, circadian rhythms can regulate testosterone production by various signaling pathways.…”

“…Previous work has demonstrated ZEN exposure in mice causes testicular germ cell depletion, and influences steroidogenesis via the regulation of steroidogenesis-related key genes [4]. Several recent papers have demonstrated that ZEA induces apoptosis of mouse TM3 cells through the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway [14], and decreases steroidogenic gene expression in mouse primary LCs and the TM3 cell line, accompanied by diminished testosterone synthesis [15]. A recent review by Li et al also showed that ZEN induces an imbalance of oxidative stress and estrogen, which contributes to reproductive injuries in rodents at all stages of their lives [16].…”
