Zenker Diverticulum

Abstract: Esophageal injury is a rare but serious complication occurring after anterior cervical spine surgery. Pharyngoesophageal, or Zenker, diverticulum is an acquired outpouching of the pharyngeal musculature just proximal to a functional esophageal stricture, clinically manifesting as dysphagia, aspiration, and weight loss. We report a case in which a patient developed a pharyngoesophageal diverticulum, accompanied by retropharyngeal abscess, first identified 2 years after a 3-level anterior cervical fusion with al… Show more

“…It is an acquired pouch which is located proximally to the upper esophageal sphincter, usually on the posterior hypopharyngeal wall [4]. Pharyngoesophageal diverticulum is mostly found among elderly people who are in their 70s or 80s, and only a few authors have reported it as a much rarer complication of anterior spine surgery [5][6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…Ba, Allis, and Sood identified the physical findings of a pharyngeal diverticulum after ACDF to be dense scar tissue and adhesions in the prevertebral fascia around the diverticula [2, 5, 8]. This delayed esophageal injury following ACDF is often attributed to erosion from a screw migrating and piercing the pharynx.…”
