Zeolites of the Natrolite-Thomsonite Series

Abstract: The relationship between the chemical composition and crystal structure of zeolites of the natrolitethomsonite series is analyzed using published data. The positions of their anhydrous residues in the NaO 0.5 -CaO-AlO 1.5 -SiO 2 composition pyramid provide conclusive evidence that the minerals gonnardite and tetranatrolite are the same solid solution.

“…[41]. The cowlesite mineral relates to the natrolite subgroup as a fibrous zeolite in the Dana classification, where Strunz placed it in a separate series [42]. The cowlesite has peaks at 2Ɵ of 5.8º, 4.46º, 19.8º and 30.07º [43] while cristobalite appeared at 2Ɵ of 21.7º [41].…”

“…25 Most natural kaolinites are composed of other crystal minerals as impurities which can reduce the adsorption capacity of the clay. Such impurities include anorthite, a calcium-rich aluminosilicate mineral belonging to the plagioclase feldspar family, cowlesite, a low-silica zeolite with extra-framework cations, 26 and quartz, a natural hydrophilic oxide-free silica mineral. 27 Removal of these impurities or their conversion to an adsorbent can greatly improve the adsorption capacity of kaolinites.…”
