Zero Valent Iron Nanoparticle-Loaded Nanobentonite Intercalated Carboxymethyl Chitosan for Efficient Removal of Both Anionic and Cationic Dyes

Abstract: A zero valent iron-loaded nano-bentonite intercalated carboxymethyl chitosan (nZVI@nBent–CMC) composite was fabricated and characterized by FT-IR, TEM, TEM–EDX, XRD, BET surface area, and zeta potential measurements. The as-fabricated nZVI@nBent–CMC composite exhibited excellent removal efficiency for both anionic Congo red (CR) dye and cationic crystal violet (CV) dye. The maximum uptake capacities of CR and CV onto the nZVI@nBent–CMC composite were found to be 884.95 and 505.05 mg/g, respectively. The adsorp… Show more

“…For LBC, XRD spectrum signifies the amorphous phase of the as-synthesized LBC. Moreover, XRD of NZVI points out its characteristic peak at 2θ = 44.8° which is the fingerprint of body-centered cubic NZVI [42], whereas XRD spectrum of NZVI-LBC nanocomposite elucidates the distinguishing peak of NZVI with lower intensity than the pristine NZVI, reflecting the successful incorporation of NZVI into LBC [40].…”

“…Essentially, this combination has a dual benefit since BC enhances the dispersion of the magnetic NZVI particles and inhibits their aggregation [39]. Thence, BC endows NZVI more stability in air with low aggregation, retaining its good adsorption and reduction properties [40]. On the other hand, NZVI ameliorates the adsorption capability of BC, as well as their magnetic behavior, and facilitates the separation by an external magnet rather than centrifugation and filtration techniques that are less efficient and consume longer time [41].…”

“…Incorporation of clays into chitosan matrices is a feasible solution to overcome its flaws since clays have great features; good adsorptive properties, low cost, high thermal stability, high surface area and special catalytic activity 33 35 . Amongst these clays, attapulgite is a subset of hydrous magnesium aluminum silicate with concrete features including hydrophilicity, non-toxicity, low price, abundant resources as well as its high surface area and high porosity 36 , 37 .…”

“…Untreated wastewater from the textile industry containes toxic organic dyes such as methylene blue (MB). 27 , 28 The application of nanomaterials including PtNPs, AgNPs, and AuNPs as antimicrobial agents is well documented. Among the pathogenic bacterial strains, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli ( 29 ) cause urinary tract infections, enterocolitis, bloodstream infections, pneumonia, and bone infections.…”
