Zeta Potential of Ion-Conductive Membranes by Streaming Current Measurements

Abstract: Surface charge properties have a significant influence on membrane retention and fouling performance. As a key parameter describing the surface charge of membranes used in aqueous applications, zeta potential measurements on membranes of various types have attracted great attention. During the zeta potential characterization of a series of ion-conductive sulfonated poly(sulfone) membranes, it was found that the measured streaming current varied with the thickness of the sample, which is not predicted by the cl… Show more

“…Table 1 gives the physical properties of lubricants (LB104 ILs with MLG). The zeta potential is a key parameter indicating the dispersions of charged particle, which depends on the potential difference between the dispersion medium and the stationary layer of fluid attached to the dispersed particle [37]. The magnitude of the zeta potential illustrates the degree of electrostatic repulsion between adjacent charged particles in a dispersion system.…”

“…The electrolyte solution flowed, in alternating directions, along the slit composed of the two parallel surfaces covered by the membrane samples. This flow of electrolyte solution generated streaming potentials from which the zeta potential of the membrane surface was calculated using the Helmholtz-Smoluchowski equation [54,55]. The electrolyte solution was 1 mM KCl and the pH was automatically adjusted by the addition of KOH and HCl.…”

“…In contrast, the streaming potential method can be used for materials with much larger dimensions and thus complex pretreatment of materials is not required. Streaming potential measurements have been widely used to characterize charged materials such as membranes (Lawrence et al 2006;Xie et al 2011), hollow fibers (Lanteri et al 2012), natural fibers (Hubbe et al 2007; Wang and Hubbe 2001) and porous materials (Sheffer et al 2007). The zeta potential at the root surfaces of plants is likely to be adequately calculated from streaming potential because of the large and fiber-like dimensions of roots.…”
