ZIKA Virus infection in pregnant women in French Guiana: More precarious-more at risk

Abstract: Background A recent study in French Guiana suggested that populations living in precarious neighborhoods were more at risk for Chikungunya CHIKV than those living in more privileged areas. The objective of the present study was to test the hypothesis that Zika virus (ZIKV) infection was more frequent in precarious pregnant women than in non-precarious pregnant women, as reflected by their health insurance status. Methods A multicentric cross-sectional study was conducted in Cayenne hospital including ZIKV preg… Show more

“…The present results suggest that early in the epidemic, the populations most at risk for CHIKV infection were the most socially vulnerable populations in the poorest neighborhoods, whereas DENV appeared to have affected a richer population and richer areas [ 66 •]. Similar findings were found during Zika’s outbreak in French Guiana [ 67 ]. Further investigations are required to disentangle the potential determinants of this observation.…”

“…Seroprevalence levels were often higher than those observed in the coastal zone. This situation probably reflects a socio-economic and environmental context favorable to the transmission of arboviruses due to explosive demographic growth accentuated by large movements of people living in precarious conditions [ 41 ] and high anthropization conducive to the proliferation of Ae. aegypti populations in this part of the territory.…”

“…Noticeably, AHR is highly expressed in the human placenta and its expression is upregulated in placentas of women suffering unexplained miscarriages ( 105 , 106 ). Hence, it is conceivable that sustained AHR activation in women exposed to pollutants and living in impoverished conditions with degraded housing and malnutrition ( 107 , 108 ) might increase their susceptibility to ZIKV infection and ZIKV congenital syndrome.…”
