“…In this study, we confirm the findings by Zang and Guo (2009) but we also explain the increased expression of TJ proteins as a consequence of reduced local inflammation. In fact, other authors suggest that Zn may halt the progression of gastrointestinal disease by halting the inflammatory process (Faa et al, 2008), but, despite the anti-inflammatory effect that we observed in this study could be generally attributable to Zn from ZnO, regardless of the source, the TJ protein structure was clearly modulated in a source-dependent way, as demonstrated by the relative abundance of both occludin and ZO-1, which were higher in mZnO-800 than in pZnO. Although reasons for this are not clear at the moment, some contribution might derive form the microencapsulation itself.…”
