Zinc-Induced Enhancement of Lymphocyte Function and Viability in Chronic Uremia

Abstract: Spontaneous and phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-induced lymphocyte blastogenesis (LB) was measured by the incorporation of 3H-thymidine into lymphocytes from zinc-treated (group I) and non-zinc-treated (group II) patients on maintenance hemodialysis and from normal controls. The results were expressed as disintegrations per minute (dpm) per 200,000 cells. Spontaneous LB was comparable in the 3 groups. LB in response to PHA was impaired in group II (mean dpm 28,244 ± 13,499 SEM) as compared to group I (163,… Show more

“…Marcen et al 25 encontraram uma associação entre desnutrição e linfopenia em pacientes submetidos à hemodiálise. Alguns fatores, entre eles, deficiência de zinco 26 podem causar linfopenia em pacientes renais crônicos. O fato de 74% dos pacientes estudados apresentarem contagem de linfócitos totais abaixo de 1.500 mm 3 não permite a utilização desse parâmetro como marcador nutricional em nossa população.…”

“…Depressed immune function was demonstrated in hypozincemic uremic patients [12,[49][50][51]. Zn was shown to stimulate the synthesis of a thymic hormone (thymulin) and reverse the age-related diminution of thymic activity in patients with CRF [44,52].…”

“…Zn supplementation may thus restore impaired cellmediated immunity, improve lymphocyte function and viability in uremia [49,57]. Normalization of the low Zn serum levels in dialyzed patients led to the increase in helper/suppressor (CD4/CD8) ratio, increased delayed hypersensitivity to intradermal antigens [58] and also increased titers of tetanus antibodies [59] were demonstrated.…”
