Zinc Transfer during Hemodialysis in Chronic Renal Failure Patients

Abstract: We examined zinc transfer during hemodialysis and serum zinc concentrations of hemodialyzed patients. 10 outpatients were studied during a single dialysis and 6 hospitalized patients were monitored during a week-long series of dialysis. Serum zinc concentrations increased significantly by diffusion and hemoconcentration after 5-hour dialysis. In 6 hospitalized patients, the daily protein and calorie intake were measured to examine the relationship between serum zinc and diet. We found a good correlation betwee… Show more

“…This change occurred mainly by hemoconcentration and partially by diffusion as we previously reported [3]. The percent of ultrafiltrable zinc fraction was about 10% in total serum zinc of uremic patients [6], We did not find any significant difference between corpuscular zinc lev els before dialysis (1,299 ±146 pg/dl) and after dialysis 1,302± 144 ug/dl; (table I).…”

“…Both nickel and zinc have been found to be deficient in the serum of chronic hemodialysis patients [2,3]. In the 30 patients enrolled in this study, serum nickel levels before dialysis were 0.22±0.03 ug/dl, significantly lower than in the 30 normal subjects (0.56 ± 0.08 ug/dl).…”
