Seven LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb datings from granitoids in the southern basement of the Songliao basin were done in order to constrain the ages of the basin basement. The cathodoluminescence (CL) images of the zircons from seven granitoids indicate that they are euhedral-subhedral ones with striped absorption and obvious oscillatory zoning rims. The dating results show that a weighted mean 206 Pb/ 238 U age is 236±3 Ma for quartz diorite (sample No.T6-1) located in the western slope of the basin, that weighted mean 206 Pb/ 238 U ages are 319±1 Ma (2126 m) and 361±2 Ma (1994 m) for diorite (sample No.YC1-1) and granite (sample No.YC1-2) located in northern part of southeastern uplift of the basin, respectively, and that weighted mean 206 Pb/ 238 U ages are 161±5 Ma, 165±2 Ma, 165±1 Ma and 161±4 Ma for samples Q2-1, SN121, SN122, and SN72 granitoids located in southern part of southeastern uplift of the basin, respectively. The statistical results of ages suggest that the middle Jurassic granitoids constitute the main part of basement granitoids, and that the Hercynian and Indo-Sino magmatisms also occur in the basin basement. It is implied that the Songliao basin should be a rift one formed in the intracontinent or active continental margin settings in the late Mesozoic after the Middle Jurassic orogeny took place.Songliao basin, basement, granitoid, zircon, LA-ICP-MS U-Pb datingThe Songliao basin, as the most important nonmarine oil-gas-bearing basin in eastern China, has been an issue for geologists to research its formation, evolution, and origin [1][2][3] . Compared with the study on its formation and evolution, filling sequence, and sequency stratigraphy [4] , the research on the basement, especially its chronology, is scare [2,[5][6][7] . However, the nature of the basin basement is not only necessary for us to understand the tectonic evolutionary history in northeastern China and the mechanism of basin formation, but also important for us to instruct the oil-gas exploration in the Songliao basin. At present, the discussion on the basement chronology mainly focuses on whether the Precambrian crystalline basement exists [2][3][4][5] and whether the basin formed on the Hercynian orogenic belt [5] ? The existence of above-mentioned problems should be attributed to lack of the high accuracy chronological research on the basin basement. So far, there are only two zircon U-Pb dating data from the basement granitoids (165 Ma and 350 Ma) [2] . The others mainly result from K-Ar dating (135 Ma and 350 Ma) [8] . The reliability of K-Ar dating results is decreased due to intensive reformation and alteration of the basement. Based on this case, the paper provides seven LA-LCP-MS zircon U-Pb dating results for basement granitoids in the southern Songliao basin, which is very necessary to constrain the formation and evolutionary history of the basin basement.
