Zooplankton Community Responses in a Perturbed Tropical Stream in the Niger Delta, Nigeria~!2009-07-22~!2009-10-22~!2010-04-09~!

Abstract: Abstract:The effect of abattoir wastes and other anthropogenic activities on the distribution and abundance of zooplankton and environmental variables were investigated in Orogodo River, southern Nigeria. Samples of zooplankton were collected for a period of six months from three stations, representing upstream of the river course, effluent discharge point and downstream of the river course. A combined total of 79 species of zooplankton were encountered in the study. Station 1 recorded the highest number (78 s… Show more

“…The mean DO values (4.92-5.46 mg/L) recorded in this study all fell under the permissible limits of the Federal Ministry of Environment, but, according to Boyd (1979), the DO threshold level in the water (3-12 mg/L) has been shown to support life-forms in water. In consonance with the reports of Arimoro F. O. et al (2007), Aisien et al (2010), Arimoro and Oganah (2010), and Idise and Maduka (2011) in the same region, there was no significant difference in the DO throughout the stretch of the river under study. The COD and BOD 5 values reported in this study exceeded the Federal Ministry of Environment's permissible limits.…”

“…Little or no human activities were responsible for the high zooplankton abundance in station 2 while sand mining activities were responsible for the low abundance in station 4. Arimoro and Oganah (2010) recorded lower abundance in station 3, where sand mining occurred in contrast to station 1 (control) with no activity recorded. Station 6 showed signs of recovery after the impacts.…”

“…The relatively low zooplankton abundance could be attributed to anthropogenic impact exacerbated by seasonal influences. Arimoro and Oganah (2010) recorded a higher abundance (4322 individuals/1) in the Orogodo River of the Niger Delta, Nigeria, perturbed by abattoir effluent and sand mining activities. The most abundant zooplankton recorded was Daphnia pulex (Cladocera) with 175 individuals/L (5.17% of the total zooplankton abundance).…”

“…As espécies R. rotatoria e L. bulla foram as que mais contribuíram em termos numéricos na condição Expostos. Essas espécies são beneficiadas por elevados índices de nutrientes e matéria orgânica, reflexo de ações antrópica (Arimoro & Oganah 2010, Begum & Harikrishna 2010, Jorge-Filho et al 2014, Arruda et al 2017, confirmando que essas espécies são tolerantes a condições de alta produtividade.…”
