In the Northeast of Brazil, goat breeding plays an important socioeconomic and strategic role in coexistence within the semi-arid region. The rural nature of the species and adaptations that are appropriate for the climate are some of the characteristics that favor the Northeast as the largest national producer of goats (93% of the national herd). In spite of this, sanitary deficiencies facilitate the appearance and diffusion of pathogenic agents that compromise the productivity, e.g., Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, which are widespread in the national herd and cause damages in the industry. The objective of this study was to characterize caseous lymphadenitis (CL) in lamb cuttings at semi-arid abattoirs. The research was carried out between March and August 2017 at the Municipal Abattoir of Patos, State of Paraíba, Brazil, where the caprines from this region are slaughtered. We studied 304 animals with no defined racial pattern, of both the sexes, characterized according to their age group as evidenced by their teeth, submitted to ante-and post-mortem examinations with microbiological confirmation. Cheek material was processed for diagnostic confirmation, using the techniques of isolation and microbiological identification (gold standard). The bacteriological examination confirmed the presence of the agent in 21.38% of the animals, in which 13.16% were females and 8.22% were males. Of those affected, 11.51% had the clinical form of the disease, while 9.87% had the subclinical form and 1.31% had both the clinical form as well as the internal impairment. The precrural (25.71%), mammary (11.43%), and prescapular (11.43%) lymph nodes were the most affected. Internally, the most affected were the liver (63.33%), lung (13.33%), and medium mediastinal lymph nodes (10%). The presence of skin lesion/scars (Odds ratio = 2.394, 95% CI = 1.371 -4.182, p = 0.003) and sex (females) (Odds ratio = 1.845, 95% CI = 1.053 -3.232, p = 0.044) were found to be risk factors. CL is present in goats from the intermediate geographical region of Patos, reinforcing the need for control measures, with attention to the inspection of animals in the slaughter line. The complexity of livestock production systems implies the interrelation of physical, technical, social, environmental, and animal factors. This study aimed (i) to classify and characterize farms in representative typologies and (ii) to point out the main factors responsible for the differences between the sheep farm typologies in Brazilian semiarid region. A structured questionnaire with 29 variables related to social, physical, livestock, technological, herd management, and productive indicators was applied to 65 sheep farmers. The farms typology was classified, characterized, and differentiated using several techniques of multivariate analysis. Three sheep production systems were identified: Emerging (16 farms): young adults farmers, medium farms and herds, intensive management, intermediate technological level, and high meat production; Conventional (40 farms): adult farmers, smallholder farms, small herds, low technological level, and low meat production; and traditional (09 farms): mature farmers, large farms and herds, extensive management, low technological level, and high meat production. Social, physical, livestock, herd management, technological, and productive factors showed discriminatory power (P < 0.05) to differentiate typologies. The family-based productive system still represents the primary sheep production system. Sheep farming in the Brazilian semiarid region is characterized as extensive, heavily dependent on natural resources, and susceptible to seasonal variations. Some common characteristics among the farms studied were the use of family labour and the predominance of extensive breeding with low stocking density. The emerging system is expanding and may represent the future of sheep farms. It is believed that the traditional system can intensify its management and migrate to the emerging system in the future. The present study was conducted to investigate in 20 extensive sheep farms for the seroprevalence of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis (n=402) and Toxoplasma gondii (n=228). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used for the detection of antibodies to C. pseudotuberculosis/T. gondii. It was observed that C. pseudotuberculosis showed the highest prevalence in the region (34.07%) with statistically significant presence (p<0.05) in ewes. Antibodies to T. gondii was reported in 14.91% of the animals studied. About C. pseudotuberculosis/T. gondii coinfection the categories of rams showed significant (p<0.05) differences, suggesting that this gender could perpetuate the diseases in the flocks. It was concluded that the knowledge about the diseases in the region under study would facilitate the execution of prophylactic measures, especially against the diseases that pose risks to the public health and cause damages to the producer.
