The reactions of DL-1,4-disulfanylbutane-2,3-diol and 1,3-disulfanylpropan-2-ol with dodecacarbonyltriiron have been investigated. As main products, the iron complexes 1 and 2 were isolated and characterized by spectroscopic methods, as well as single crystal X-ray analysis. Additionally, the unusually large bond angles in the dithiolato bridge was investigated via density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, the electrochemical features have been studied by cyclic voltammetry.

The simple organometallic, (-S2)Fe2(CO)6, serves as a precursor to synthetic analogues of the chemically rudimentary iron-only hydrogenase enzyme active site. The fundamental properties of the (-SCH 2CH2CH2S)[Fe(CO)3]2 compound, including structural mobility and regioselectivity in cyanide͞carbon monoxide substitution reactions, relate to the enzyme active site in the form of transition-state structures along reaction paths rather than ground-state structures. Even in the absence of protein-based active-site organization, the ground-state structural model complexes are shown to serve as hydrogenase enzyme reaction models, H 2 uptake and H2 production, with the input of photoor electrochemical energy, respectively.

Key indicators: single-crystal X-ray study; T = 293 K; mean (C-C) = 0.007 Å; R factor = 0.043; wR factor = 0.056; data-to-parameter ratio = 18.9.The trinuclear title compound, [Fe 3 ]. Both outer Fe I atoms are six-coordinated in a distorted ocahedral coordination geometry defined by the bridging Fe II atom, three carbonyl C atoms and two bridging S atoms. The coordination number of the central Fe II atom is seven and includes bonding to the two outer Fe I atoms, four bridging S atoms and one carbonyl C atom. The resulting coordination polyhedron might be described as a highly distorted monocapped trigonal prism. In the crystal packing, the molecules exhibit a chain-like arrangement parallel to [100] and [001], and the resulting layers are stacked along [010]. Abstract: The reactions of 1,2- and 1,3-dithioles, HSRSH, with Fo3(CO)12 give the dinuclear compounds Fe2(CO)6(SRS) in good yields. With R = C2H4 or R = C3H6 the trinuclear compounds (CO)3Fe(SRS)Fe(CO)(SRS)Fe(CO)3 containing an open Fe3 chain are obtained.
