Zwitterion Functionalized Carbon Nanotube/Polyamide Nanocomposite Membranes for Water Desalination

Abstract: We have shown from both simulations and experiments that zwitterion functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be used to construct highly efficient desalination membranes. Our simulations predicted that zwitterion functional groups at the ends of CNTs allow a high flux of water, while rejecting essentially all ions. We have synthesized zwitterion functionalized CNT/polyamide nanocomposite membranes with varying loadings of CNTs and assessed these membranes for water desalination. The CNTs within the polyamide… Show more

“…Constructing nanomaterial-based or nanomaterialmodified advanced nanofiltration, microfiltration and reverse osmosis membranes has great potential from the viewpoint of both experimental results and theoretical predictions. [125][126][127][128][129] Because of their high surface area and special surface properties, nanomaterial-dominated membranes exhibit some advantages in the area of high flux and high rejection rate compared with traditional filtration membranes. However, despite these pioneering advances, research toward designing broad nanomaterial-dominated membranes remains far less developed, and a thorough study is highly desired.…”

“…The functionalized CNTs can also be employed to selectively remove particular particles by specific or non-specific interactions. Thus, CNTs can be used as a "Gate-Keeper" molecule [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27]. The smooth hydrophobic walls and the pore diameter of CNTs allow ultra-efficient water transport.…”

“…Based on the dimension of nanomaterials [9], these various inorganic nano-fillers employed in TFN membranes can be classified as zero-dimensional hydrophilic metals and metal oxides [10][11][12], one-dimensional channel-possessing nanotubes [13][14][15][16][17][18], and three-dimensional porous nanomaterials such as zeolites [19][20][21][22], ordered mesoporous silica and carbon [23,24]. In general, most of the current studies mainly focus on taking advantage of good hydrophilicity or porous structure of nanofillers to produce a more permeable RO membrane.…”
