Zygomaticomaxillary suture maturation: Part II—The influence of sutural maturation on the response to maxillary protraction

Abstract: Structured Abstract Objective To evaluate the influence of the maturational stages of zygomaticomaxillary sutures (ZMS) on the response to maxillary protraction. Subjects and Methods A total of 40 Class III patients were treated retrospectively with either a combination of rapid maxillary expansion and facial mask (RME/FM) or bone-anchored maxillary protraction (BAMP). The RME/FM group consisted of 18 patients (mean age 8.3 years), while the BAMP group was comprised of 22 patients (mean age 11.8 years). The… Show more

“…For example, in the BAMP group, a displacement of A-point has been observed with a maximum of 6.5 mm and a minimum of −0.8 mm. Such a large individual variation could be caused by zygomatic suture maturation, with more favorable results reported for patients at an early stage of maturation [ 25 ]. According to Angelierri et al, the zygomaticomaxillary sutures show a high level of fusion at the chronological age of 15-years and older.…”

“…Most of the resistance to midpalatal suture opening seems to be explained by the fusion of circummaxillary sutures 13,25 . In a recent study, Angelieri et al 26 found an association of the maturation stages of the zygomaticomaxillary suture and the response to RME followed by protraction.…”

“…CT evaluation of suture maturity has demonstrated efficacy in predicting degree of maxillary expansion with a face mask system. 10,17 This system could potentially be modified to better quantify fracture risk and guide preoperative device selection as well.…”
