α-Mangostin Extraction from the Native Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) and the Binding Mechanisms of α-Mangostin to HSA or TRF

Abstract: In order to obtain the biological active compound, α-mangostin, from the traditional native mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.), an extraction method for industrial application was explored. A high yield of α-mangostin (5.2%) was obtained by extraction from dried mangosteen pericarps with subsequent purification on macroporous resin HPD-400. The chemical structure of α-mangostin was verified mass spectrometry (MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR and 13C NMR), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and UV-Vis spectrosc… Show more

“…Since MIC and MBC against S. aureus and P. acnes of AMG were 3.9 μg/ml and 7.8 μg/ml, respectively, the AMG content that was selected for loading into the formulation should provide the concentration that will achieve the antibacterial activity and should be more than these critical concentrations. Because AMG is a low-polarity compound [31], its solubility in water is very low, about 0.2 μg/ml [14]. Therefore, purified water could not be used as a vehicle of AMG for this purpose.…”

“…This indicated the presence of polyphenol in GME. The other peaks appearing at 1638, 1440, 1279, and 1077 cm −1 represented C=O stretching of carbonyl group, aromatic C=C stretching, C-O-C stretching of methoxy group, and C-O-C stretching, respectively [27,28]. C-H stretching from methyl groups was indicated by two peaks at 2853 and 2923 cm −1 [5].…”

“…One such fruit is the mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.), which belongs to the Clusiaceae (Guttiferae) family. This evergreen tree grows in the tropical forests of Southeast Asian countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and China (Guo et al, 2016;Yang et al, 2017). Mangosteen trees grow to heights of 25 m, while its flowers are 4-5 cm across and are red and green (Obolskiy et al, 2009).…”
