Asymmetric hydrogenation (AH) and direct reductive amination (DRA) are both efficient transformations frequently utilized in industry. Here we combine the asymmetric hydrogenation of prochiral olefins and direct reductive amination of aldehydes in one step using hydrogen gas as the common reductant and a rhodium-Segphos complex as the catalyst. With this strategy, the efficiency for the synthesis of the corresponding chiral amino compounds is significantly improved. The practical application of this synthetic approach is demonstrated by the facile synthesis of chiral 3-phenyltetrahydroquinoline and 3benzylindoline compounds.

“…Thus, in the search for new anticancer compounds, the ethyl acetate fraction of the sequential methanol extract of the leaves and twigs of D. sootepense was found to display interesting cytotoxic activity. Guided by this cytotoxic testing, the investigation of the active fraction (EtOAc fraction) and subfractions resulted in the isolation of a new cytotoxic 7-hydroxy aporphine alkaloid, 6a,7-dehydrodasymachaline (1) along with five known alkaloids, ()-nordicentrine (2) [13] The aporphinoid-and berberine-type alkaloids are an important class of plant secondary metabolites with diverse structures and significant biological activities [21][22]. Plants containing aporphinoid-and berberine-type alkaloids have been employed as folk medicine for the treatment of various illnesses.…”

Bioassay-guided fractionation of the cytotoxic ethyl acetate fraction of the sequential methanol extract from the leaves and twigs of Dasymaschalon sootepense led to the isolation of a new 7-hydroxy aporphine alkaloid, 6a,7-dehydrodasymachaline (1) along with the five known compounds ()-nordicentrine (2), dicentrinone (3), ()-sinactine (4), aristolactam AII (5) and epiberberine (6). Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. This is the first report of alkaloids 1-2 and 5-6 from the genus Dasymaschalon. Compounds 1 and 5 showed cytotoxicity against a panel of cancer cell lines.

Rapid and accurate HPLC/ESI-QTOF-MS/MS and UPLC/ESI-QqLIT-MS/MS methods were established for identification, characterization and quantification of phytochemicals in the ethanolic extract of Berberis petiolaris. These methods, therefore, can be used for studies on phytochemical variation in different parts of the plant. Principle components analysis (PCA) may be used for plant part discrimination.
