“…During the avulsion process, the main river levee is breached first, and then sand deposits are formed due to the sediments carried by the channel (Törnqvist & Bridge, 2002). Therefore, the impoverishment of the carbon isotopic signal in these sandy layers may have been attributed to the sediments from the levees that were breached during the avulsion process, given that they are covered mainly by C3 plants (Nunes da Cunha & Junk, 2010), generating, therefore, an impoverished carbon signal in sediment deposits (Boutton et al, 1998). However, the isotopic signal analyzed together with the C/N ratio indicate that the signal impoverishment in these sandy layers may be related to a longer flooding period that allowed algal activity (Talbot & Johannessen, 1992;Meyers & Lallier-Vergès, 1999).…”

“…This general cycle of increased C 4 growth during warmer portions of the year and C 3 dominance during cooler portions is consistent with observations reported elsewhere Tieszen et al, 1980). Estimated C 3 /C 4 vegetation percentages were converted into mean landscape δ 13 C values assuming mean values for C 3 (-27‰) and C 4 (-13‰) plants (Boutton et al, 1998).…”

“…This separation of C sources is due to higher discrimination of 13 C in C3 photosynthesis (Calvin cycle) than in C4 photosynthesis (Hatch-Slack pathway) (Farquhar et al 1989). The δ 13 C values from plants with C3 photosynthesis typically range from −40 to −23‰, while those in plants with C4 photosynthesis range from −19 to −9‰ (Boutton et al 1998). After a C3-C4 vegetation change, the relative contribution of new and old SOC can be estimated based on the mass balance of C isotope content and the isotopic signature can thus be used to follow the dynamics of SOC in situ.…”
