Retinal detachment is a serious medical problem due to its potential ability to cause irreversible vision loss, which can eventually lead to vision loss if left untreated. Among the many different forms of retinal detachment, rhegmatogenous retinal detachment appears to be the most common form. Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment occurs when there is a break or tear in the retina that allows vitreous fluid to seep in and detach the retina from the underlying tissue.
