Observations by geodetic methods occupy a large volume in the total complex of on-site observations at the Sayano-Shushenskoe hydroelectric station. They permit estimating the condition of the structure and are used for solving problems related to a rise of the water level in the reservoir.The gravity-arch dam of the Sayano-Shushenskoe hydrostation [4] is being constructed on a rock foundation (schists), has a crest length of 1066 m, height of 245 m, crest width of 25 m and base width of 102 m, and consists of 60 sections.The specifications of the project's chief engineer stipulate the following requirements imposed on the accuracy of observations by geodetic methods on the dam: the mean square error (MSE) of determining settlements of the dam and its foundation should not exceed i mm; the MSE of determining the horizontal displacements of the foundation and dam in the contact zone is I mm; on approaching the crown at the crest the error increases and in this section is 3 mm.Such a differentiated approach to the accuracy of determining horizontal displacements in which the MSE is not the same for different parts of the dam but is proportional to the expected (calculated) displacements was realized for the first time on the arch dam of the Inguri hydroelectric station and proved to be correct. In this case the cost of taking measurements decreases and the possibility of using geodetic methods on the dam broadens.The plan of observations of settlements and horizontal displacements of the SayanoShushenskoe dam was developed at the Leningrad Branch of the All-Unlon Planning, Surveying, and Scientific-Research Institute (Lengidroproekt) and was examined and approved by the technical council of the Institute. The installation of the monitoring and measuring instruments and observations on the dam are being performed by a survey group of Lengidroproekt.
