The objectives of this study were to investigate the replicability, construct equivalence, item bias and reliability of the Social Axioms Survey (SAS) in the South African Police Service (SAPS). A cross-sectional survey design was used. the participants consisted of applicants who had applied for jobs in the SAPS (n = 1535), and the SAS was administered to them. An exploratory factor analysis utilising target rotation applied to all 60 items of the SAS revealed four interpretable factors (Social Cynicism, reward for Application, Fate Control, and Spirituality/religiosity). Values of tucker’s phi higher than 0,90 were found for seven language groups (Zulu, Sotho, Tswana, Swati, Tsonga, Venda and Pedi). Analyses of variance found that item bias was not a major disturbance. Unacceptable alpha values were found for some of the scales of the SAS
The objective of this study was to validate the new Social Axioms Survey (SASII). The study sample comprised university students (n = 793) as well as their family members and friends (n = 645). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) following and an initial exploratory factor analysis yielded a five-factor model: Social Cynicism, Social Complexity, Reward for Application, Religiosity and Fate Control. The findings of this study support the use of the new SASII in South Africa for research purposes.
The exceptional value of the Psalms in the Christian church The Psalms have a special place in the Bible as God's great prayer and hymn book. It is the work of various people, under the most representative situations, but it is also the work of the Holy Spirit. The Psalms express the lives, struggles, joy and praise of people before God with great clarity and true compassion. Their experiences of life, seen in the light of the living God, are vivid and real. The Christian Church took over the Psalms as their own, after the example of Jesus, whose life and work was seen as pictured in them. It became their prayer and hymn book - their life guide. The message of the Psalms is of such exceptional spiritual depth, expressing in great clarity every human need and emotion before God, that the Christian Church could find and understand itself in those situations and could associate itself with it.
A more meaningful evening service We inherited the practice of the evening service (evening prayer), and with it the problem of its diminishing importance. Various factors contributed to this state of affairs. Guidelines for a more meaningful evening service, are: » It must be a genuine church service » It must have a different character from the morning service, and as such a freer character. » The form should be varied and can have alternatively different accents: an ordinary morning service, a service with holy communion, a service with the accent on teaching, prayer, song, the main lines of the church work, confession and witness, discussion or fellowship/koinonia. The watch word is proper preparation, good control, variation and responsibility.
