Although this review is confined to some chemical and biochemical as pects of phospholipids, the number of relevant publications not included ex ceeds that of the list of references. In addition to recent reviews on chemical composition (1), chemical synthesis (2, 3), and metabolism of phospholipids (4-7), and on membrane structures (8) cited here, reference will be made at the beginning of several sections of this chapter to more specialized surveys. At present, naturally occurring phospholipids are denoted as L-a-com pounds (9), D-l-derivatives (10, 11), and L-3-compounds (4). This situation creates confusion which may be avoided by adoption of the system of abso lute stereochemical designation proposed by Hirschmann (12). This stereo specific system of numbering of the carbon atoms of glycerol and other com pounds which possess reflective but not rotational symmetry will be followed in this review.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
