Introduction. The paper presents the results of a research of quality of life of the military serving under the contract in the Kola Polar region. The research was conducted using the World Health Organization Quality of Life brief version questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF). The purpose of this work was to assess the quality of life and identify the factors adversely affecting the quality of life. The sociological questionnaire study in a group of 209 servicemen serving under the contract in the Kola Polar region was made. Results of the study showed lack of dependence of the general assessment of quality of life on a military rank, income level, age, education, marital status and the number of children in family, and at the same time, statistically significant correlation in the presence of diseases or under any treatment in the last two weeks prior to the survey in a respondent. The analysis of the general assessment of quality of life revealed the highest level in the sphere of micro-social support — 12,2 points (81,3% of the maximum level), and the lowest level in the sphere of social well-being — 26,0 points (65% of the maximum level). Answers to questions concerning existence of an opportunity for rest and entertainments and about availability of medical care are scored the lowest — 2,1 and 3,1 points, respectively. Answers to questions concerning state of environment, satisfaction with monetary pay and conditions in the place of residence were also scored low — 3,3 points. Assessment of quality of life using the WHOQOL-BREF can be used in order to identify and neutralize negative factors of military service and conditions of life and also for improvement of measures for maintaining health, high performance of military work, and motivation in servicemen under the contract in the Arctic zone.
The geopolitical importance of the Black Sea region substantiates higher requirements for maintaining health of the military personnel under the contract. The purpose of the study: to assess health indicators of all categories of military personnel serving under the contract in the Black Sea Fleet for the period from 2013 to 2020. Material and methods: the authors have analyzed reports on military medical unit performance in the form 3-med for the period from 2013 to 2020. Based on the information received, the authors have calculated rates of incidence, prevalence, incidence with hospitalization, incidence with temporary disability, retirement, mortality and health index. Dynamics in health indicators have been assessed using the dynamic series method. Average values of the absolute increase and rate of growth/decrease of indicators for the period 2013-2020 have been calculated as well. Mean difference and 95% confidence intervals have been used for presenting quantitative data. Microsoft Excel 2016 and IBM SPSS ver.25 application package have been used for data processing. Results: average incidence rate adds up to 195.91 ‰ (CI 95%: 108.86-282.96), average prevalence rate equals to 1002.00 ‰ (CI 95%: 543.34-1460.67), incidence rate with hospitalization - 224.67 ‰ (CI 95%: 156.98 - 292.37), and incidence rate with temporary disability - 4335.50 ‰ (CI 95%: 2957.71 - 5707.29), retirement rate - 7.45 ‰ (CI 95%: 4.75 - 10.15), mortality rate - 92.36 (CI 95%: 47.00 - 137.72), health index - 47.39 (95% CI: 40.53 - 54.24). The main contribution to the incidence structure of the studied military contingent is made by diseases of the X, XIII and XII classes. Statistically significant trends towards decreasing incidence of infectious diseases and disorders of eye and adnexa and increasing mortality has been identified. Conclusions: Participation of the Black Sea Fleet units in local military operations can be accompanied by a significant increase in disease incidence and incidence with disability. The obtained data can be used to plan medical support for the Black Sea Fleet operation, as well as for the ongoing and future planning of the medical and preventive activities of the Fleet medical service in the field of military health protection.
One of the important indicators characterizing current level of the Armed Forces development is life quality of military personnel. The pandemic of the new coronavirus infection Sars-CoV-2, (hereinafter referred to as NCI) affects all spheres of human life, and therefore it is relevant to study its impact on quality of life of military personnel. The purpose of the study: to give a comprehensive assessment of life quality of military personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and methods. In February-March 2022, analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted using individual data. A survey was conducted in a group of 374 military personnel serving under contract in Severodvinsk. The research tool was a short version of the WHO Quality of Life questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF) with an additional block of questions associated with the COVID-19. To describe data, the median and interquartile range (25th and 75th percentiles) were calculated. To compare indicators between several groups of military personnel, analysis of variance using the Kraskel-Wallis criterion was used. The nonparametric Mann-Whitney criterion and Spearman correlation criterion were used to compare the variables. Assessment of impact of quality of life on social well-being was carried out by constructing a linear regression model with the inclusion as independent parameters of answers to the passport (personal details) part of the questionnaire and answers to questions related to previous diseases, by a step-by-step method of selecting criteria, using F-statistics as a selection method with an inclusion value of less than 0.05 and an exclusion value of more than 0.1. Differences were taken as reliable with a probability of error of the first type of less than 5% (p<0.05). Statistical data processing was performed using the IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 25 for Windows application software package. Results. The highest score was given to the sphere characterizing physical and mental well-being (82.8%), while the lowest score was given to the sphere characterizing social well-being (75.0%), the median of the overall assessment of quality of life equaled to 103.00, the interquartile range [96.00; 108.00], the share in the highest assessment equaled to 79.2%. A posteriori analysis showed statistically significant differences in the field of self-perception between groups of servicemen who are officially married and divorced (U=2475.5, p=0.004) and in the field of microsocial support (U=2408.5, p=0.001), and in the field of social well-being between groups of servicemen who indicated in the questionnaire 12 to 20 thousand rubles as income per family member per month and those with income of more than 30 thousand rubles (U=3070.5, p=0.003). The main determinants of the sphere of social well-being of quality of life include importance of self-perception of the effectiveness of vaccination against COVID-19, side effects related to vaccination against COVID-19 and side effects associated with the new coronavirus infection. Conclusion. The study on quality of life of military personnel is a necessary component in the military healthcare system, since it allows us to quantify a subjective indicator that combines major areas of interaction with external environment and internal state of a serviceman, which directly depends upon his state of health. The obtained data indicate a statistically significant impact of the factors associated with COVID-19 on quality of life of military personnel. The study has identified a statistically significant inverse effect of side effects associated with NCI disease on responses to the question about finances to meet their needs, as well as a statistically significant inverse effect of side effects associated with vaccination from COVID-19 on responses to the question about satisfaction with conditions of the place of residence.
