We identified the pertinent factors affecting parents’ choice of a particular senior high school (SHS) in Ghana, focusing on parents with at least one child in a SHS in Ghana and are residents of Cape Coast. The approach and design used were quantitative and descriptive survey design respectively. A sample of 637 of the parents, made up of 349 women and 288 men, was used. The parents were selected using convenience and snowball sampling techniques. A questionnaire, with a reliability coefficient ranging from 0.735 – 0.829, was the instrument used to collect the data. Out of the 637 parents sampled, we were able to retrieve 588 completed questionnaires, representing 92.3 percent response rate. The data were analysed using cross tabulation and linear multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed that parents preferred public boarding SHS which is single-sex education. Also, parents preferred schools with excellent academic record, quality instruction, and positive school values. Similarly, family/parental related factors such as family moral and religious values, and parents’ income and education levels, and also social related factors such as school popularity and brand, peer influence, and social network predict significantly and positively parents’ choice of a particular SHS. We conclude that school, family and social related factors are able to influence parents’ school choice. It is recommended to heads of SHSs to be attentive to the various institutional factors and create schools that address the needs of the parents in their communities in order to attract and retain students.

Article visualizations:

The purpose of the paper was to investigate behavioural patterns exhibited by preschoolers in large class size and suggested recommendations to tackle them. The study was based on pragmatism philosophical thought where concurrent triangulation mixed method design was used for the study. At the quantitative phase, descriptive survey was used while multiple case study was also used for the qualitative phase. The sample size was 234, where 216 questionnaires were distributed to preschool teachers in the quantitative phase. At the qualitative phase, interviews were conducted with 12 preschool teachers while observations were carried out at 6 early childhood education centres (ECECs). The study shows that out of seat behaviour, talking out of turn, disrespecting teachers, verbal and physical aggression towards teachers were the behavioural patterns exhibited by preschoolers in large class size. Considering these behavioural patterns, the study suggested that building design used for ECECs should have toilet and other facilities to prevent preschoolers from exhibiting out of seat behaviour in classroom. The finding also shows that building more ECECs in addition to the existing ones and employing more substitute teachers to assist the permanent teachers could help teachers performance scaffolding, zone of proximal development and social interaction in managing preschoolers in classroom. The purpose of the study was to analyse the roles of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) in the Kassena -Nankana East District of the Upper East Region of Ghana. Primary data was collected by interviewing thirty (30) TBAs using a structured questionnaire coupled with personal interviews. The data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics with the help of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel. The results showed that almost all the thirty (30) TBAs interviewed had enough knowledge in nutrition and medication; personal hygiene; exercise and breastfeeding. They claimed to perform the following roles: maternal delivery, antenatal care, family planning and education of pregnant and nursing mothers. Also, most members in their communities patronized their services and the reasons given were: financial constraints, bad nature of roads leading to health centres and long distances to health 36 D. K. Boah and A. H. Saanicentres. Absence of delivery posts, lack of electricity, lack of respect by members of their communities and financial constraints were their challenges. The study revealed that TBAs play a key role in reducing maternal mortality in the KassenaNankana East District. It is therefore recommended that, the work of TBAs should be given adequate attention. Government and other stakeholders must give TBAs financial assistance to motivate them and acquire the necessary equipment in carrying out their duties. Rural electrification project should be extended to all the rural areas of the district to help in the service delivery of the TBAs. The government through the Ministry of Health must provide health posts for TBAs' service delivery in the various villages within the district.
