The study focused on the adoption process of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) on a developing economy, with particular reference to Nigeria. The paper is based on the data obtained from literature survey and archival sources in the context of the globalization of International Financial Reporting and the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).Nigeria has embraced IFRS in order to participate in the benefits it offers, including attracting foreign direct investment, reduction of the cost of doing business, and cross border listing. In implementing IFRS Nigeria will face challenges including the development of a legal and regulatory framework, awareness campaign, and training of personnel. Recommendations were made to forestall such challenges which include strengthening education and training, establishment of an independent body to monitor and enforce accounting and auditing standards.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the relationship between internal audit functions (IAF) and financial reporting quality (FRQ) and whether such a relationship is moderated by senior management support (SMS) in listed companies in Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). Design/methodology/approach This research is a cross-sectional study, using primary data in the form of a survey sent to 175 listed companies in NSE. A total of 149 questionnaires have been collected and analysed out of which 97 were found to be useful and used in the final analysis. Findings The findings indicate a positive and significant relationship between internal audit qualities of work performed, internal control activities, coordination between internal and external auditors and FRQ and this finding was also supported by SMS as a moderator. However, the results show a negative and insignificant relationship between internal audit competency, organisational status and FRQ. Research limitations/implications The findings support the assumption with regard to agency theory. The board should support the IAF to serve as an effective monitoring mechanism in minimising opportunistic management actions. Regulators should also ensure adequate structures that will strengthen the organisational status of the internal auditors to perform towards improving FRQ. Originality/value The study contributes to the existing literature by assessing the effect of IAF on FRQ as moderated by SMS.
This paper looked at development of accounting practice in Nigeria and analyzes how the country's economic, taxation, and other factors affect the development of financial accounting regulations in Nigeria. The study observed that political issues, privatization and capital market growth brought about several reforms that have improved financial reporting and disclosure requirements in Nigeria. The study suggests the strengthening the capacity of accounting regulatory bodies for monitoring and enforcing accounting standards, and building the capacity of accounting professional bodies to build the confidence of stakeholders in the accounting function and to inspire potential investors.
The purpose of this chapter is to examine the major differences between Nigerian financial reporting rules and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) following Nigeria's accounting reporting convergence to IFRS. The chapter documented evidence of differences between Nigerian Statement of Accounting Standards (NSAS), Companies and Allied Matters Act, 1990, Nigerian tax rules and IFRS requirements. It also discusses the IFRS adoption process in Nigeria and the benefits Nigeria stand to gain in adopting IFRS. The chapter discusses the challenges that might be encountered in the process of adoption of IFRS in Nigeria. Finally, the chapter provides recommendations through which these challenges can be addressed and suggest ways for further IFRS adoption research in Nigeria.
Abstract. This study compares the internal audit functions between private and the public sector. Features examined include hierarchical rank of internal audit function, internal audit transfer, outsourcing of internal audit services and working relationship of internal audit with external auditor. The study is based on a survey of internal audit managers and chief internal auditors in private and public sector entities in Nigeria. The results revealed that there is no much difference in hierarchical rank of internal audit function in both sectors. While the results showed that differences exist in the reporting status between internal audit in the two sectors with private sector internal audit reporting to audit committee and chief executive officer and public sector internal audit reporting to chief executive officer and chief financial officer. Almost a similar amount of work is outsourced, and private sector entities are more likely to outsource than those in public sector. There is slight difference between internal audit activities and interaction with external auditor in the two sectors with private sector more likely to coordinate in the area of access to audit working papers.
