Adrenal cysts are very rare lesions, especially with parasitic origin. But with the wider application of ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) more adrenal cysts are detected incidentally. To gain more insight into this entity, the records of nine patients with hydatid cysts of adrenal gland seen at our department from January 1980 till January 2002 are reviewed. There were four men and five women, and their ages ranged from 15 to 80 years (median: 41 years). All of the patients had unilateral cysts. Seven cysts were located on the right and two on the left side. Five of the cysts were primary and four were secondary. In three patients the cysts were found incidentally. The most common presenting symptom was pain, which was present in six patients. An indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test was positive in six cases. In all patients, US and CT successfully imaged all cysts, but the definitive diagnosis was made by macroscopic and microscopic examination of the cyst's content. The patients were treated surgically. In all patients adrenal glands with the cystic masses were removed. The median follow-up period was 16 months (range: 6-64 months). No evidence of recurrence was found in any patient. It should not be forgotten that cystic masses of the upper abdomen might also originate from the adrenal gland. The etiology and nature of the cyst should be well researched, and appropriate treatment should be given as soon as possible. Surgical excision of the gland, including the cyst is the treatment of choice.
We aimed to present our clinical experience with FG treatment. Fournier's gangrene (FG) is a rare but serious disease characterized by progressive necrosis in the genitourinary and perineal region. The retrospective study included 43 patients. Patients were divided into 2 groups as survivors and nonsurvivors. Included in the analysis were data pertaining to demographics, predisposing factors, comorbidities, results of bacteriologic analyses, number of debridements, duration of treatment, FG Severity Index (FGSI) score, fecal diversion methods (trephine ostomy or Flexi-Seal Fecal Management System-FMS), and dressing methods (wet or negative aspiration system). In the nonsurvivor group, urea, WBC, and age were significantly higher, whereas albumin, hematocrit, platelet count, and length of hospital stay (LOHS) were significantly lower compared to the survivor group. Mean FGSI was lower in survivors in comparison with nonsurvivors (5.00 ± 1.86 and 10.00 ± 1.27, respectively; P < 0.001). We conclude that FGSI is an important predictor in the prognosis of FG. Vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) should be performed in compliant patients in order to enhance patient comfort by reducing pain and the number of dressings. Fecal diversion should be performed as needed, preferably by using FMS. The trephine ostomy should be the method of choice in cases where an ostomy is necessary.
A high arginase level in breast cancer was observed to possibly be released into the serum: namely, the more advanced the breast cancer, the higher the serum level of arginase enzyme activity. Therefore, this enzyme might serve as a useful biological marker in breast cancer while also being an indicator of breast cancer progression.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide (NO), and free radical scavenging enzyme activities in erythrocytes of zinc (Zn)-deficient rats and to investigate the relationship among these parameters in either group. Sixteen male rats with a weight of 40-50 g were used for the experiment. The rats were divided into control (n = 8) and Zn-deficient groups. At the end of the experiment, the animals were anesthetized with ketamine-HCl (Ketalar, 20 mg/kg(-1), i.p.), and the blood was collected by cardiac puncture after thoracotomy. Blood samples were collected in vacutainer tubes without and with K(3)-EDTA as anticoagulant. Erythrocyte catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GRD), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, total (enzymatic plus nonenzymatic) superoxide scavenger activity (TSSA), nonenzymatic superoxide scavenger activity (NSSA), antioxidant potential (AOP), and serum zinc (Zn) values in the Zn-deficient group were significantly lower than those of the control group, whereas NO and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were significantly higher than those of the control group. The results show that Zn deficiency causes a decrease in antioxidant defense system and an increase in oxidative stress in erythrocyte of rats.
