Perinatal asphyxia (PA) is a global neonatal problem that significantly contributes to morbidity and mortality. 1,2 It accounts for up to 20% of neonatal death and it is the 5th cause of mortality in children under the age of five. 1 Nigeria ranks amongst the countries with the highest neonatal death rates in the world with 34.3 deaths per 1000 live births (528/day). 3,4 In Nigeria, the regions with the highest neonatal mortalities are the Northeast and Northwest. 3 Perinatal asphyxia is an insult to the fetus/newborn due to hypoxia with/without Ischemia. 1 The causes of hypoxia in the fetus vary from sudden complete cessation of blood flow due to placental abruption, to intermittent/continuous cord compression, to placental insufficiency. 1 Conditions associated with placental insufficiency are varied and range between maternal medical conditions, fetal conditions, and placental and cord abnormalities. 1,2 The state of hypoxia and metabolic acidosis results in asphyxia, which is the final step before cellular and organ failure. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
