The antioxidant and free radical scavenging effects of two fractions of the ethanolic extract (HSCF, chloroform soluble fraction and HSEA, ethyl acetate soluble fraction) obtained from the dried flowers of Hibiscus sabdariffa L were investigated. The total antioxidant activity of the extracts was estimated to be 4.6 and 8.6 mM of vitamin C for HSCF and HSEA, respectively. Both HSCF and HSEA scavenged hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) (79-94%) at the dose of 500 microg. Similarly, the extracts showed inhibitory (70-80%) effects on superoxide anions radicals (O(2) (- *)) at a dose of 1000 microg. The concentrations required for a 50% scavenging of hydroxyl radical (OH) (IC(50)) were 380 and 200 microg for HSCF and HSEA, respectively. HSEA and HSCF were better scavengers of O(2) (- *), *OH and H(2)O(2) as compared to BHA, quercetin and alpha-tocopherol. At a concentration of 25 microg/mL HSCF and HSEA exhibited 32 and 38% inhibition on CCl(4)-NADPH-induced lipid peroxidation, respectively, while both extracts exhibited 80 and 89% inhibitory effects at 100 microg/mL. Pretreatment with H. sabdariffa extracts orally with 100 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg simultaneously with intraperitoneal injection FeCl(2)-ascorbic acid-ADP mixture reduced (p < 0.01) the formation of malondialdehyde content. Treatment of rats with HSCF, HSEA and vitamin C (standard antioxidant) significantly inhibited the induction of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes by sodium arsenite (2.5 mg/kg) (p < 0.001) after 24 h by 60, 70 and 50%, respectively. The results indicate that extracts of H. sabdariffa showed strong antimutagenic activity and free radical scavenging effects on active oxygen species.
Renal ectopia, even though a benign condition, presents diagnostic challenges when its complications arise. Cold abscess in an abnormally sited kidney may, therefore, create a diagnostic conundrum for the clinician. We present the case of a 55-year-old male who had a suppurating ectopic kidney that mimicked an abdominal visceral mitotic lesion necessitating initial laparotomy, reviewed the literature, and highlighted the need to consider the differential diagnosis, especially in patients who have been referred from peripheral hospitals where generous antibiotic therapy has been instituted. We also recommend undertaking a preoperative split renal scintigraphy where available, especially when nephrectomy is considered.
Antioxidant agents of plants origin have continued to attract interest because of the potential they hold in the maintenance of human health accompany with their minimal side effects. The present study sought to evaluate the comparative free radical scavenging activities of ethanol extracts of air dried Morinda lucida leaves (EMLL) and Psidium guajava leaves (EPGL) by measuring their ability to scavenge 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, nitric oxide (NOˉ) radical, 2,2 azinobis-( 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS*), and inhibit lipid peroxidation (LPO). Antioxidant activities of the extracts were also determined in the plasma of the rats fed with the extracts by assaying for antiradical activity against DPPH and NO radicals in vitro. In vivo antioxidant effects of the extracts were also evaluated in paracetamol treated rats. Twenty rats were randomly divided into four groups for this study. Group 1 received normal feed as control, group 2 received 14.30mg/kg b.w of paracetamol by gavage, groups 3 and 4 received 400mg/kg b.w of EMLL and EPGL each for 7 days plus paracetamol on the 8th day respectively. Catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) status were assayed for in the kidney, liver and serum. Histopathological examinations of liver and kidney were also carried out. The results showed that EMLL and EPGL exhibited free radical scavenging ability in dose dependent manner towards DPPH, NO, ABTS radicals as well as inhibition of LPO. The results of evaluation of the antioxidant potentials of the extracts while in the plasma showed that they were associated with free radical scavenging activity in vivo. Paracetamol treatment caused significant (p<0.05) decreases in SOD and CAT activities, and marked increase (p<0.05) in MDA levels when compared with the control. However, compared with paracetamol only group, the extracts caused significant (p<0.05) increase in SOD and CAT activities and decreased MDA levels. Histopathological analysis of kidney and liver showed that the extracts were able to offer protection against paracetamol-induced kidney and liver injuries. The extracts therefore have strong antioxidant and cytoprotection abilities.
Thyroglossal duct cyst (TDC) is a rare condition in adults. This is a report of its presentation and standard treatment with good outcome in adults in a Sub-Saharan tertiary hospital.It is a retrospective review of five adult patients who were managed over a five-year period culled from archived records and casenotes. The three males and two females have a median age of 35 years and a range of 15-74 years. Each of them presented with anterior neck masses while one, in addition, had a painful swelling with a discharging sinus. The median duration of the symptoms was 4.5 years. Four of the cysts were in the infrahyoid location and all the patients had a Sistrunk operation. The median duration of followup was six months, without complications. Surgeons need to have a high level of suspicion for this condition in adults.
