Background: Diabetes mellitus is highly prevalent in the Middle East and the burden associated with it is dramatically increasing. Pharmacists working in collaborative healthcare teams have an important role to improve outcomes in the primary care of diabetes. Objectives: To evaluate the impact of a collaborative pharmaceutical care service (CPCS) on improving outcomes among patients with diabetes in a primary care setting. Methods: This was a retrospective, multiple time series study involving patients attending an ambulatory diabetes clinic at Qatar Petroleum Healthcare Center in Dukhan, Qatar. Patients' glycated hemoglobin A 1c , fasting plasma glucose, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and lipid profile were obtained at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months of receiving CPCS through a retrospective chart review. A repeatedmeasures analysis of variance test was used to determine the impact of the intervention on clinical outcomes. Results: Ninety-six patients with diabetes were included in the analyses. There was a statistically significant reduction (ie, improvement) in glycated hemoglobin A 1c by 1.4%, fasting plasma glucose by 41.3 mg/dL, body mass index by 1 kg/m 2 , systolic blood pressure by 14.9 mm Hg, and diastolic blood pressure by 8.7 mm Hg from baseline to 12 months (P<.001 for all). Nevertheless, no significant reductions were observed in the lipid profile. Conclusions: CPCS provision improves clinical outcomes in patients with diabetes over a 12-month follow-up period in a primary healthcare setting. Future studies should determine the long-term impact of a collaborative care model in this setting.
Background The incidence of chronic illnesses is increasing globally. Non-adherence to medications and other medicationrelated problems are common among patients receiving long-term medications. Medication use review (MUR) is a service provision with an accredited pharmacist undertaking structured, adherence-centered reviews with patients receiving multiple medications. MUR services are not yet available in community pharmacies in Qatar. Objective The current study aims to evaluate com-munity pharmacists' knowledge, attitudes, and perception towards establishing MUR as an extended role in patient care. Setting Private community pharmacies in Qatar including chains and independent pharmacies. Methodology A cross-sectional survey using a self-administered ques-tionnaire was conducted among licensed community phar-macists from December 2012 to January 2013. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistics. Main outcome measures Knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to MUR concept and services. Results A total of 123 participants responded to the survey (response rate 56 %). The mean total knowledge score was 71.4 ± 14.7 %. An overwhelming proportion of the par-ticipants (97 %) were able to identify the scope of MUR in relation to chronic illnesses and at enhancing the quality of pharmaceutical care. Furthermore, 80 % of the respondents were able to identify patients of priority for inclusion in an MUR program. However, only 43 % of the participants knew that acute medical conditions were not the principal focus of an MUR service, while at least 97 % acknowledged that the provision of MUR services is a great opportunity for an extended role of community pharmacists and that MUR makes excellent use of the pharmacist's professional skills in the community. The participants generally reported concerns about time, dedicated consultation area, and sup-port staff as significant barriers towards MUR implemen-tation. Conclusion This study suggests that community pharmacists in Qatar had sufficient knowledge about the concept of MUR and its scope, but there were still important deficiencies that warrant further education. The findings have important implications on policy and practice per-taining to the implementation of MUR as an extended role of pharmacists and as part of Qatar's National Health Strategy to move primary health care forward.
Background In line with global trends, cancer incidence and mortality may have decreased for specific types of cancer in Qatar. However, the cancer-related burden on patients, healthcare systems, and the economy is expected to expand; thus, cancer remains a significant public healthcare issue in Qatar. Qatar’s free access to cancer care represents a considerable economic burden. Ensuring the best utilization of financial resources in the healthcare sector is important to provide unified and fair access to cancer care for all patients. Experts from the Qatar Oncology Health Economics Expert Panel (Q-OHEP) aimed to establish a consistent and robust base for evaluating oncology/hematology medications; involve patients’ insights to accelerate access to cutting-edge medications; increase the value of cancer care; and reach a consensus for using cost-effective strategies and efficient methodologies in cancer treatment. Methods The Q-OHEP convened on 30 November 2021 for a 3-hour meeting to discuss cancer management, therapeutics, and health economics in Qatar, focusing on four domains: (1) regulatory, (2) procurement, (3) treatment, and (4) patients. Discussions, guided by a moderator, focused on a list of suggested open-ended questions. Results Some of the salient recommendations included the development of a formal, fast-track, preliminary approval pathway for drugs needed by patients with severe disease or in critical condition; and encouraging and promoting the conduct of local clinical trials and real-world observational studies using existing registry data. The Q-OHEP also recommended implementing a forecast system using treatment center data based on the supply/demand of formulary oncology drugs to detect treatment patterns, estimate needs, expedite procurement, and prevent shortages/delays. Furthermore, the panel discussed the needs to define value concerning cancer treatment in Qatar, implement value-based models for reimbursement decision-making such as health technology assessment and multiple-criteria decision analysis, and promote patient education and involvement/feedback in developing and implementing cancer management guidelines. Conclusion Herein, we summarize the first Q-OHEP consensus recommendations, which aim to provide a solid basis for evaluating, registering, and approving new cancer medications to accelerate patient access to novel cancer treatments in Qatar; promote/facilitate the adoption and collection of patient-reported outcomes; and implement value-based cancer care in Qatar.

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a highly prevalent non-communicable disease worldwide. The prevalence of diabetes in Qatar exceeds the prevalence of diabetes in the Middle East and North Africa region and the globe. Similarly, diabetes-related complications and mortality are dramatically increasing worldwide. Poor health outcomes and debilitating consequences can result from inadequate control of diabetes. Previous studies have demonstrated the benefit of pharmaceutical care services on outcomes of diabetes. No studies were done in Qatar regarding this issue. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to: (1) characterize the clinical profile of patients with diabetes attending an ambulatory care clinic at Qatar Petroleum (QP) Medical Center including diabetes-related comorbidities and complications; (2) evaluate the impact of a Comprehensive Pharmaceutical Care Service (CPCS) on glycemic control [glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG)]; (3) evaluate the impact of the CPCS on diabetes comorbidities including lipid profile [low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and total cholesterol (TC)], systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and body mass index (BMI) and; (4) classify the drug-related problems (DRPs) identified by pharmacists during the follow-up period.
