Background The long-term health consequences of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are still unclear. The majority of previous trials addressed the post-COVID-19 symptoms through comprehensive medical questionnaires for relatively short periods after recovery. We tried to detect the potential pathological clinical signs and biochemical residue which persist for more than 3 months after the negative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test of SARS-CoV-2. Results Among 120 COVID-19 survivors of mean age 38.29 and 55.6% male proportion, systolic blood pressure was significantly elevated (P=0.001). Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer showed higher values in COVID-19 survivors (P< 0.001). Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyl trans-peptidase (GGT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were significantly elevated in contrast to serum albumin that was reduced in COVID-19 survivors (P ≤0.001). Serum lipase, amylase and albuminuria were higher in COVID-19 survivors (P ≤0.001). Regression analysis (AOR, 95% CI) showed that ESR (P = 0.014), haemoglobin concentration (P = 0.039), serum lipase (P= 0.018), blood urea nitrogen (P= 0.003), albuminuria (P= 0.046), 25(OH) vitamin D (P= 0.002), and serum uric acid (P= 0.005) were the significant predictors of COVID-19 survivors (94.8% an overall prediction). Conclusion COVID-19 survivors experienced residual significant clinical and biochemical alterations that necessitate comprehensive medical care and close follow-up for longer periods.
Background: Lymphoma is a group of blood cell tumors which develop from lymphocytes. The main forms of lymphoma are Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and non-HL (NHL). Cytokines may contribute to lymphoma and they are related to risk NHL and HL. Aim: Assessment of the serum level of certain inflammatory markers as complementary indicators to confirm diagnosis of lymphoma patients that may be subjected to more invasive biopsy methods. Method: The serum levels of interleukin (IL)-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), and eotaxin were assessed by Bio-Plex Pro assays in 81 lymphoma patients and 44 NHL and 37 HL patients before and after chemotherapy treatment as well as 20 healthy persons as a control group. Results: Lymphoma patients showed significantly raised marker levels before treatment and significantly reduced levels related to pre-treatment and controls of post-treatment for most of the markers. MCP-1 reported the highest diagnostic accuracy. G-CSF significantly raised pre-treatment and TNF-α. MCP-1 significantly increased in post treated HL compared with NHL. In order to distinguish HL from NHL, G-CSF reported the highest diagnostic accuracy. NHL patients reported complete remission (CR) and those who reported stable disease (SD) and progressive disease (PD) represented 25% and 38% respectively compared with 16% and 27% of HL patients, while partial remission (PR) of HL patients were 56% compared with 36% of NHL patients. Conclusion: Most of the markers were significantly increased in pre-treatment but significantly decreased post-treatment. However, it was not considerably enough to get better prognosis of the disease. Elevated serum levels of inflammatory markers correlate with disease severity and low benefit from treatment.
Background: Transducin-like enhancer of split 1 ( TLE1 ( is a member of the TLE family of transcriptional co-repressors that control the transcription of a wide range of genes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic role of TLE1 gene expression in patients with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). Method: This study was conducted on 97 newly diagnosed T-ALL patients admitted to the Mansoura University oncology center (59 males and 38 females) with median age (33 years) in addition to 102 apparently healthy individuals served as a control group. TLE1 gene expression was measured in both patients and control groups by real time – PCR. The calculation of relative gene expression was done using the ΔΔCt method. Results: TEL1 gene expression was significantly down regulated in T-ALL cases (median 2.83) as compared to controls (median 84.65) (p < 0.001). The low TEL1 gene expression was significantly associated with CNS infiltration, non-remission and higher relapse rate (p< 0.001, 0.001 and 0.023 respectively). Likewise, Low TEL1 gene expression was significantly associated with shorter OS and DFS (P= 0.012 and 0.011 respectively). Furthermore, Low TEL1 gene expression was considered as risk predictor of relapse with OR 3.636(CI.1.422-9.295) (P =0.007); and OR 0.803(CI. 0.609-0.96) (P=0.021) and independent predictor of T-ALL patient’s outcome with OR 0.619 (CI. 0.44-0.872) (P=0.006). Conclusion: TLE1 gene expression was significantly down regulated in T-ALL cases as compared with controls. Low TLE1 expression is independent predictor of the T-ALL patient’s outcome.
Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) represents a major public health challenge worldwide. It affects more than half of the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). It may progress to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and carcinoma. The sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2 inhibitors) may improve hepatic steatosis. We aimed to estimate the effect of empagliflozin or dapagliflozin versus conventional treatment on fatty liver status in patients with concomitant T2D and NAFLD over 24 weeks. Results: We found a significant improvement of the fatty liver index (FLI) with a significant reduction of the bodyweight, body mass index, waist circumference, ALT, AST, GGT, AST to ALT ratio, lipid profile, and lipid profile ratios in both SGLT2 inhibitors groups versus the conventional treatment group. Post hoc analysis revealed no statistically significant difference between the SGLT2 inhibitors groups (dapagliflozin versus empagliflozin). Conclusion: SGLT2 inhibitors, empagliflozin and dapagliflozin, exert a beneficial effect on the fatty liver index of diabetic patients with NAFLD.
