Extractive summaries produced from multiple source documents suffer from an array of problems with respect to text cohesion. In this preliminary study, we seek to understand what problems occur in such summaries and how often. We present an analysis of a small corpus of manually revised summaries and discuss the feasibility of making such repairs automatically. Additionally, we present a taxonomy of the problems that occur in the corpus, as well as the operators which, when applied to the summaries, can address these concerns. This study represents a first step toward identifying and automating revision operators that could work with current summarization systems in order to repair cohesion problems in multidocument summaries.
This study investigated the impact of using digital stories in promoting deeper understanding in nursing students about palliative care concepts. Students (N = 134) created a 5-minute narrated digital story utilizing VoiceThread technology that synthesized and applied knowledge that had been presented in class and course readings. Postsurvey and focus group evaluation data revealed that through the writing and sharing of digital stories, students embraced the personal and complex nature of palliative care.
This paper reports on a case study of a Health Open Educational Resources (OER) project in order to examine how to facilitate cross-institutional collaboration for OER production. This study assesses collaboration needs, identifies social and technical barriers, and builds a collaboration model to facilitate OER production. In doing so, we make three contributions to the GROUP community: (1) Whereas previous studies on distributed collaboration tend to focus on well-developed collaboration, in this study we research collaboration in Health OER at an early stage of development; (2) By studying collaboration involving both developing and developed countries, we identify components that are particularly critical for collaboration between teams spanning differently resourced nations; (3) By studying the Health OER project, we better understand factors that affect distributed collaboration when participants are not externally funded and are constrained by their local organizations.
