Objective: This study explores how the adolescents identify diet and why do they select these types of foods as diet and how they conceptualize health. Methodology: This is an empirical study conducted applying qualitative methods in a semi-urban Muslim community at Sylhet district in the northeastern region of Bangladesh. Data were collected through in-depth interviews. Results: Adolescents had diverse conceptions on foods related to nutrition and health care. Adolescents relate food categorization mainly with the price of food, function of foods and a number of sensory characteristics, such as taste, smell and color. They categorized foods according to the price of foods-poor and rich; and to the function of foodshot and cold. They had different preferences in different genders according to the sensory characteristics of foods-black color, sour taste etc. They had also some gender specific taboo on some foods. Conclusion: This study reveals that adolescents have diversified thinking on foods related to nutrition and health care practices, which demands to provide special attention for improving their understanding on food, nutrition and health care.
This cross sectional study was carried out in the department of gastroenterology, Rangpur Medical College Hospital, Rangpur from January 2014 to July 2014 to compare between Invasive & Non-Invasive Diagnostic Evaluation of Tuberculosis Peritonitis In our prospective in clinically suspected patients. Total 30 patients (age 39.69±21.26, 18M/12F) with clinical suspicion of peritoneal tuberculosis were included in this study after analyzing selection criteria. Laparoscopic peritoneal biopsy with 'histopathological' diagnosis was considered as gold standard against which accuracies non-invasive test of two biomarkers (ADA & CA-125) were compared. Cut off value of ADA and CA-125 is 24 U/l, 35 U/ml respectively. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy of ADA as a diagnostic modality in peritoneal tuberculosis were 87.5%, 83.33%, 95.45%, 62.5% and 86.67% respectively whereas CA-125 was found to have 83.33% sensitivity, 50% specificity, 86.9% positive predictive value, 42.85% negative predictive value and 76.6% accuracy. Both biomarkers were simple, non-invasive, rapid and relatively cheap diagnostic test whereas laparoscopy was an invasive procedure, costly & requires trained staff and not without risk and also not feasible in the entire centre in our country. So ascitic fluid ADA and serum CA-125 was important non-invasive diagnostic test for peritoneal tuberculosis.Medicine Today 2015 Vol.27(2): 20-22
Introduction: Rheumatic disorders are one of the largest health problems in the world both in developed & developing countries. They are the most common causes of chronic health problems and long term physical disability, work loss and loss of income. The study was conducted among the 15 plus years aged people in selected areas based on broad objective of exploring the prevalence of rheumatic disorders.
Materials and Methods: It was an Observational cross sectional study. The study was conducted among the people of nineteen small villages of Sonargaon upazilla in Narayanganj district, Bangladesh. This study was conducted From January 2010 to December 2011. All subjects of the defined area aged 15 years were included in this study.
Results: The point prevalence rate of definite rheumatic disorders was 23.7%. Age, sex and occupations were associated with the overall prevalence rate. The prevalence was higher (51.8%) in older aged (65years and above) population. Females (34.5%) were affected more than males (18.6%) in this rural area.
Conclusion: These diseases are associated with some form of disability and work loss, as well as loss of income. More community- based studies with the design for the identification of associate’s factors for individual rheumatic disease are needed. So that appropriate messages can be given to the community for prevention and treatment of rheumatic disorders.
