The variability of monogenean gill ectoparasite species richness in 19 West African cyprinid species was analyzed using the following seven predictor variables: host size, number of drainage basins, number of sympatric cyprinid species, host diversity, association with mainland forest, host ecology, and monogenean biological labelling. The size of the host species accounted for 77% of the variation in the number of parasite species per host, and host ecology an additional 8%. Together the effects of host size and host ecology accounted for 85% of the variation in monogenean species richness. This study shows that the deciding factors for explaining monogenean species richness in West African cyprinid fishes are host species size and host ecology. These results were compared with main factors responsible for parasite species richness in fish communities. Other possible explanations of monogenean community structure in west African cyprinids are discussed.
In southern France, Diplozoon gracile (Monogenea, Polyopisthocotylea), parasitizes four sympatric cyprinids. One of these host species, Barbus meridionalis, naturally hybridizes with another species of barbel, Barbus barbus, which is never parasitized by D. gracile under natural conditions. This hybridization has previously been studied and described as an introgression of B. barbus by B. meridionalis. The hybrids are parasitized by D. gracile, and parasite prevalence increases in proportion to the introgression rate, i.e., the percentage of B. meridionalis genes. The causes for this preferential distribution of the parasite in the hybrid population are analysed on the basis of ecological and ethological differences between the two parent species.
We have investigated the influence of Microphallus papillorobustus (Trematoda) on the reproductive biology and mating patterns of its intermediate host Gammarus insensibilis (Amphipoda). Infected Gammarus species show altered behaviour which renders them more susceptible to predation by Charadriiform birds, the parasite's definitive hosts. In a natural population of G. insensibilis, mean parasite intensity was higher for unpaired individuals than for paired individuals. Fecundity was reduced in infected amphipods. Size-assortative pairing was significant, although infected males were found with smaller females compared to uninfected males of the same size. There was also a positive assortative pairing by parasitic prevalence. Vertical segregation between infected and uninfected individuals, male-male competition for access to uninfected females, and female choice may explain assortative mating for prevalence. This study provides the first empirical evidence that parasites can have a direct effect on patterns of mating in gammarids.
