The maxims violation often occurred intentionally or unintentionally in daily human conversation. This study analyzes the maxim violation in one of the Indonesian short films, 'Tilik,' in which Bu Tejo and Yu Ning were the main characters. This present study aims to describe the phenomena of maxim violation by the main characters. It is qualitative descriptive research. The technique used in collecting speech was the note-taking technique, and data were taken from the transcript of the main characters' utterances. Then, to analyze the maxim violation revealed in the short film, the researchers used the Cooperative Principles from Grice's theory, which has four kinds: quality, quantity, relevance, and manner. The findings indicated that the main characters carried out all four maxim types violations. The highest maxim violation found were the quantity and quality maxim. Some certain implicatures were contained when the main character of this short film reckoned to convey the implicit message, ensure the hearer, award astonishment, take for concern, and evade the problem. The study also exposed the rationales behind violating maxims, which helped create more straightforward communication and developing further explanations. Further studies can include more extensive data to obtain more robust findings.
This study aims to find out the need analysis of teaching and learning English for vocational high school students. It is focused on the students’ needs, deficiencies, and desires. To find the source of knowledge to design proper English materials, this study was performed at one of Bina Informatika vocational high school of bintaro , Tangerang Selatan. A series of questionnaires were distributed to multimedia students to analyze their needs, shortcomings, and motivation to learn English for vocational purposes. This survey research using a series of questionnaires covering three measures to determine the needs of students for particular purposes on materials in learning English. There were 41 participants in this study involving the eleventh graders. In figuring out the majority decisions for each item asked, the data were evaluated quantitatively. In investigating the reasons for each result, open-ended interviews were conducted with both the teacher and the students. The result showed that the students were supposed to be able to use English for everyday contact that would be beneficial to their future jobs since fluency in speaking and grammar were burdening them. Therefore, these students need contextual teaching on the delivered topics. In conclusion, the results of this research can be a landmark for creating a package of materials in English learning for the students. Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui analisis kebutuhan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris bagi siswa SMK. Hal ini difokuskan pada kebutuhan, kekurangan, dan keinginan siswa yang menjadi sasaran pembelajaran. Untuk mengetahui sumber pengetahuan dalam merancang materi bahasa Inggris yang tepat, penelitian ini dilakukan di SMK Bina Informatika di Bintaro, Tangerang Selatan. Serangkaian kuesioner dibagikan kepada siswa multimedia untuk menganalisis kebutuhan, kekurangan, dan motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris untuk keperluan vokasional. Penelitian survei ini menggunakan serangkaian kuesioner yang mencakup tiga langkah untuk mengetahui kebutuhan siswa akan tujuan tertentu pada materi dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Ada 41 peserta dalam penelitian ini yang melibatkan siswa kelas sebelas. Dalam menentukan keputusan mayoritas untuk setiap item yang ditanyakan, data dievaluasi secara kuantitatif. Dalam menyelidiki alasan untuk setiap hasil, wawancara terbuka dilakukan dengan guru dan siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa diharapkan dapat menggunakan bahasa Inggris untuk percakapan sehari-hari yang akan bermanfaat bagi pekerjaan mereka di masa depan karena kefasihan berbicara dan tata bahasa membebani mereka. Oleh karena itu, para siswa ini membutuhkan pengajaran kontekstual pada topik yang disampaikan. Kesimpulannya, hasil penelitian ini dapat menjadi tonggak pembuatan bahan ajar bahasa Inggris bagi siswa.
The present study aims at investigating English Foreign Language Students’ perceptions toward online English learning at a private vocational school, Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan Bina Informatika Bintaro. In order to answer the research question, this study occupied descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected through questionnaires which were distributed to students. The participants of this study were 54 vocational high school students on 2020/2021 academic year who attended online English learning in the second semester. The samples were chosen by implementing purposive sampling technique. The results of the perception of most participants in the study expressed their support for the conduct of online English learning during the Covid-19 pandemic and agreed with the ease of accessibility. However, the study revealed some disagreement in terms of ease of use of the tools, English learning material understanding, and interaction. Further, the results of the research showed 60% of students stated that online English learning was unattractive compared to face-to-face learning, 27% said it was still interesting, and the rest were hesitant. Furthermore, it is hoped that English teachers use more suitable platforms when teaching English in online learning, so that students will be more interested in learning English online and will gain optimal learning outcomes.
This study is an effort to understand the acquisition of the English language by students at SD Islam Nurul Hidayah in Bojong Sari. The aim of this study is to identify and evaluate the acquisition of the English language by students at SD Islam Nurul Hidayah in Bojong Sari. The use of simple statistical analysis response research query, a qualitative approach was used. This study used the theory on telegraphic and formulaic speech from Tabors and Snow. In this study, there were 17 students as samples and the collection of data techniques was taken through interviews.The results of the interviews indicate that the development of English language vocabulary by children is in two stages (telegraphic/formulaic expression and constructive language): body part is 39% telegraphic and 61% productive, transportation is 62% telegraphic and 38% productive, color is 44% telegraphic and 56% productive, classroom is 40% telegraphic and 60% productive, job is 45% telegraphic dan 55% productive, nation is 43% telegraphic and 57% productive, universe is 81% telegraphic and 19% productive, self-introduction is 57% telegraphic and 43% productive, prayer before learning is 100% with 0% productive language, and prayer after learning is 100% and 0% productive language. This study then recommends that the teacher of SD Islam Nurul Hidayah in Bojong Sari increase the student's motivation to learn English and to practice English more frequently. It is recommended to do further research focusing on students in preschool or kindergarten to examine their acquisition of English. Keywords: Second Language Acquisition; Children; Elementary School
Language testing and assessment play a crucial role in evaluating the school quality system and in regarding the progress of student’s achievement. Since most classrooms in Indonesia consist of more than 30 to 40 students in a classroom, it is not an easy task to handle and to assess the educational success of students. It is very important to assess the achievement of the students. Further, teachers without standardized assessments will not understand the experience, skills, and abilities of the students in their classroom. The aim of this article is to examine the content of mid-term exams that were given to class 10 in the second semester of the 2019 – 2020 academic year. The objective of the article is to find out the content of the English test measured the communicative competence of students. There were five tests collected from five schools in different clusters of South Tangerang, Indonesia. The results of analysis showed that the tests were failed in measuring the student’s communicative competence while language focus could be tested by them.
