The migration and the problem of preserving national identity remain the central issues of the political agenda and public debate in many modern countries. The article discusses the views of the French imam Tareq Oubrou – the author of the concept of "sharia of the minority" – on the issues of Muslim identity, as well as the integration of migrants in France. T. Oubrou symbolizes a figure at the junction of two civilizations: a kind of theorist and mediator for the reorganization of Islam in France. The research was based on monographs, individual articles, and texts of speeches of the French imam over the past twenty years. The work involved the methods of cognitive and conceptual text analysis, which made it possible to reconstruct the structure of the political message and its individual components. The research results suggest that T. Oubrou refocuses Islamic identity to its inner dimension by revising its defining markers. Minimizing Islamic identity is designed to preserve and maintain the Muslim presence in the West. At the same time, he nationalizes Islamic identity, subordinating it to the civil and political norms of France. Despite the fact that the proposed identification model evokes ambiguous emotions in the Muslim environment and great doubts in the host society, some of its provisions are in demand at the state level.
Social networks are an essential part of various political processes. They help to build mental models and control official public discourse. The article features the ethnic resource as part of the regional identity constructed by the President of the Republic of Tatarstan on his Instagram. The analysis relied on both the subjective and regional presentation, as well as visual and content contexts. The author analyzed Instagram posts published in 2020-2022, as well as media publications on the issue of ethno-cultural positioning. The analysis included qualitative and quantitative content analyses, as well as static and comparative methods. Rustam Minnikhanov’s Instagram proved to be an informative source that made it possible to identify the priority attitudes to the local ethno-cultural issues in the official discourse. The ethno-cultural resource was especially important for the personal self-presentation. The regional positioning maintained a multi-ethnic Tatarstan identity, where the ethnic resource played an important role, which does not mean the real parity of the corresponding ethno-cultural traditions. The author believes that the ethno-cultural resource will continue to determine the socio-political climate in the region.
With its extensive experience in public debate about Leitkultur and multiculturalism, Germany still faces the need for a unifying identification model that would suit both the Germans and the immigrant community. This article considers the socio-political views of Seyran Ates, a female imam and the founder of the Liberal Mosque in Berlin, on cultural identity, Leitkultur, and integration in Europe. The author used the biographical approach and the method of text analysis of monographs, articles, and interviews with S. Ates. The analysis revealed a hierarchical two-component identity structure with a priority of European Leitkultur. Despite the declarative commitment to the transcultural approach, S. Ates is in fact inclined towards a simple mix of cultures. The process of convergence between migrants and the host society, which she does not want to describe in terms of integration, does not receive any other conceptual framework and remains theoretically unclear. One can only guess about its components from her speculations about transcultural identity. However, a simple coexistence in different cultural forms does not reveal the process of transformation at the subject level, but leaves a feeling of cultural chaos.
